twittle Posted March 30, 2010 Share #41 Posted March 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The top decks are also different heights. The old style knob may not fit on an M7. But the angled knob can be made to fit on an alc MP. You may be right, though.
Advertisement Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Hi twittle, Take a look here M7 à la carte?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
E.M Posted March 30, 2010 Share #42 Posted March 30, 2010 It fits on a M6TTL BP Millennium , which has the same height as an M7 , so I think it is possible . Etienne Michiels
lincoln_m Posted April 2, 2010 Share #43 Posted April 2, 2010 E.M, Ah! but weren't the M6TTL made with Zinc top plate but M7 and MP are now back to brass? The M7 does have an extra 2.5mm height but the Millennium M6TTL may have also had a longer spindle in the rewind and a different machine setup especially for the top plate. The ALC system can currently use an M7 or MP top plate and the other controls are just screw ons, but a specially machined Brass top plate for M7 with MP rewind might have too few customers and be really expensive to do as a special? I suspect the M7 and M6TTL Millennium look different inside the top plate because of the different electronics etc, only guessing, so one probably could not just swap the M6TTL Mill top with an M7. I remember asking Leica ( in a moment of silliness) if my M6TTL could be upgraded to M7 just by changing the top. "But Sir it is a totally different camera with different shutter release mechanism." "Oh yes of course it is, I'm not thinking straight", I replied. The only thing I find annoying about the M7 rewind is the way the film becomes a spring as you rewind. The M7 is a bit better than M6TTL which always sprung out of my hand. One thing I'm surprised at is that I'm preferring the M4/M6/M7 angled film advance lever to the traditional M3/M2/MP solid lever. I find the MP one catches on the side of my bag as I put the camera away and it half cocks the shutter. Also being metal it rubs my outdoor waterproof and duvet jackets, not enough to cause a tear yet but it could if I got out more. The M7 plastic one does not catch bags or wear on clothes. I guess that is why they invented it for improved usage back in M4 days. Which is the perfect M? M7 ALC or MP? I don't fancy the MP BP as the brassing looks rough to me. Digiusers gunmetal worn M7 looks really great (please post some more photos) so an MP in black chrome (ALC) would be in competition with M7 black chrome with MP cladding, despite what I said above I'd want the MP style speed dial so would have to have the MP film advance lever. We are lucky we can have the choice, or just dream about. Regards, Lincoln

Regards, Lincoln I don't mean to encourage GAS but i) Leica went to Zinc top plates cause it was cheaper than the brass pressing, the MP top plate is a robot controlled milling and this is now is cheaper then the Zinc pressing. ii) the MP (although it is a 'ALC' M6 Classic by another name) is not made on a M6 chassis but a M7 chassis so ALC options may not have a problem with 'exotic' choices. thetoaster Posted November 22, 2010 Share #45 Posted November 22, 2010 Maybe this is a good place to get opinions on this. I have an inside track on this ala carte M7. Chrome, MP chrome attachments, clean front and classic top, cognac leather, 0.72 with regular 6 frame VF. Given that a similar stock M7 would run 2000-2200, do you think there is much "market" value to justify buying it for a higher price now, especially considering future resale value? I love it, trying to get more "objective" opinions, ( as if that can happen here!).....Peter Is that actually cognac? It looks so different than the online configurator. I guess that changes my choice of color...

Guest dk_samurai Posted November 25, 2010 Share #47 Posted November 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ah! but weren't the M6TTL made with Zinc top plate but M7 and MP are now back to brass? Hey Lincoln! If it's true that the M6 TTL and M7 have the same height, then I wonder why it's not possible to have a traditional rewind knob on the M7, as this was possible with the M6 TTL Millenium edition, as E.M. pointed out. You are correct that all standard M6's have a zink top plate, but the M6 TTL Millenium edition has a brass top plate (as well as 2-3 other M6 special editions). Not that I'm interested in a rewind knob on an M7, but I could imagine other buyers would be interested in that feature. Digiusers gunmetal worn M7 looks really great... Oh yes. Black chrome is THE way to go for me. I had a black paint MP earlier, and only after 60 rolls could I already see some brassing here and there (okay, dropping the baseplate doesn't help in preventing brassing). I think the black paint solution is such a cheap finish. My camera will naturally start to wear with time, I don't need Leica to apply a cheap paint finish to speed up the worn look, thank you very much Leica. ...so would have to have the MP film advance lever. Nope, Leica can do almost any customization you can think of. So you can easily get M7 crontrols on your MP (sans the M7 shutter dial). Just be ready with your $$$. Okay, GAS scribble over. Quick, someone show us some photos of your M7's! Best, David

That's going to come as a surprise to many. The 'black chrome' on, for example, an M7 is just another kind of coating, and it is not as durable as what we normally consider chrome; it does wear through to show the underlying brass. Mine has. The ugliest camera I have is a black chrome MD-2. Where the 'black chrome' has worn away to reveal zinc-alloy. (Not that I really care what's pretty or not.) Oh, and all the white lettering has worn off.
Archiver Posted December 4, 2010 Share #49 Posted December 4, 2010 I go through little phases of thinking about an ALC, and then discarding the idea. On one hand, having a ALC versions personalizes it, and makes it exactly the way you want it, within Leica's design parameters. On the other, unless you want particular hardware or body design, it should be easier and much cheaper to get a secondhand M and customize it yourself with new leather, different wind lever, different Leica logo, etc. I recently bought a secondhand M7. The covering is starting to peel up at the edge above the frame selector lever, and the circle just came off the battery cover, so I'm thinking about getting some nice coloured leather like rich red or alligator pattern. That would really dress it up, and customize it just as much as something that rolled out of Solms.
