haotong Posted October 21, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) My pre-order was made in Feb 2006 in an authorized dealer in London, and I am currently one of the top five people in the waiting list. I called my dealer couple of times asking the "first batch" date in late September, and he told me it would be Late October, and yesterday I was told that it would be Early to Middle November. When I was browsing most M8 topics in the forum, I found the shipping date is said to be Late November or December.... and what is more "the M8 production is "pre-ordered" well into January 2007." I am getting a bit confused and a bit out-of-patient.... : ) So could anyone, especially who are on the 'top of the waiting list" confirms me that "I can get my M8 next week!?" thanks

wattsy Posted October 22, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2006 So could anyone, especially who are on the 'top of the waiting list" confirms me that "I can get my M8 next week!?" Next week? I wouldn't hold your breath. I have no idea when your dealer will start getting stock but I'd be surprised if it's much earlier than another month. For my sins I was in Classic Camera a week or so ago and was chatting to somebody there (Ivor?) about the M8. I was surprised that his expectation was that even specialist dealers like Classic Camera were unlikely to be allocated more than three bodies in the first round of shipments. His view was that non-specialist (but still authorised) Leica dealers would probably get one body! It's quite possible he was talking bollocks but I have no great expectation that I will get my pre-ordered M8 before Christmas. Fortunately I've become rather bored all the M8 hype and find myself quite satisfied at the moment with my brace of M7's and film (the horror! the horror!). I can't remember how long it has been since Leica first announced they were developing the digital M but it must be at least 18 months? A couple more months isn't going to hurt. erg Posted October 22, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2006 I'm number one on my dealers pre-order list. When I spoke to a person from Leica this spring, he told me that Leica learned from previous mistakes with the DMR. He was absolutely confident that Leica will ship the M8 the day after Photokina, because production should have been started in August. Today I know that this was a little optimistic. Anyhow, I hope to receive a call from my dealer before end of October. The more so, as Sean is expecting a production M8 for review purposes these days. marknorton Posted October 22, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2006 Yes, I'm afraid their definition of "right after Photokina" is different from mine. They announced that the camera was in development right after Epson pulled the rug from under them at Photokina 2004 so it's not that much of an overrun and not even 1 month since Photkina (seems much more!) so the schedule is holding together, just. Let's hope this talk of 2000 cameras ready to go is right. It's "said" that black is in shorter supply than chrome; presumably they estimated the mix for the initial batch and got it wrong, just like their estimates of D2 and D-Lux 2. Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 22, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2006 Just give me a body. I prefer black but would not turn down chrome.
jonoslack Posted October 22, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi There I saw a sheet from Leica on the deliveries in the UK, the first batch was expected mid-late November. Premier dealers: 3 bodies Other dealers: 1 body I can't remember it saying anything about further shipments. I think that lots of us will be waiting until the new year kind regards jono slack jonathan slack - photographs
marknorton Posted October 22, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2006 Well that's pretty bad news. By my counting, that makes it just 44 cameras for the whole of the UK and Ireland. I'm no 2 on the list of one dealer - not a Premier Dealer - and no 10 on the list of a dealer who are.
mhoutman Posted October 22, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 22, 2006 come on guys; we all know how these things work: The simple key word is PATIENCE ans in the mean time please ignore all humbug
robsteve Posted October 22, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 22, 2006 Well that's pretty bad news. By my counting, that makes it just 44 cameras for the whole of the UK and Ireland. I'm no 2 on the list of one dealer - not a Premier Dealer - and no 10 on the list of a dealer who are. Mark: Are you looking for two M8? There were a couple of people on the DMR list that ended up with two DMR on their doorsteps in the same week. If you only want one M8 you better be quick to cancel the second when the first arrives or you could find yourself with two.
marknorton Posted October 22, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 22, 2006 Yes, I'm buying - and keeping - two M8s. Nothing would please me more than to have them both turn up at the same time. All my Chrismasses would then really have come at once. I've emailed the Leica shop in Solms in my best German to ask if the M8 will be available there. If so, I'm on the first plane. ioriw Posted October 22, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 22, 2006 Mark, I mailed Solms too a few weeks ago, in my best English and got no response as yet... Iori
marknorton Posted October 22, 2006 Share #13 Posted October 22, 2006 Axel doesn't speak English; I doubt they are going to have any there but there are not too many options if my dealer is only getting one before (let's say) Christmas and I'm number 2. I had really hoped to have the camera for Christmas because the time between Christmas and New Year is the one time of the year when my business enters a catatonic state and I'd have the time to immerse myself in it. arthury Posted October 22, 2006 Share #14 Posted October 22, 2006 All I can ask is who is fueling all this demand? .... so, take it easy, folks! You certainly have many other things to do in life than to wait around for a camera.

marknorton Posted October 23, 2006 Share #16 Posted October 23, 2006 I've emailed the Leica shop in Solms in my best German to ask if the M8 will be available there. If so, I'm on the first plane. No luck here... my translation of his reply: "Hello Mr. Norton, thanks for your inquiry! Unfortunately the Leicashop also has no cameras - but there are many pre-orders for it. It will be the end of December before these existing orders are fulfilled. Yours sincerely..."
marknorton Posted October 23, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 23, 2006 According to someone posting on FM, the M8 is now back ordered in the UK until April or May next year.
erg Posted October 23, 2006 Share #18 Posted October 23, 2006 When I ordered my M8 early this year, the Leica rep. told me that they will start production during summer 2006, in order to fulfill all demands right after Photokina. Remembering how confident he was, I now believe that there must have been some trouble with the M8 production. Very likely that it's the firmware. Is there anybody who ordered his M8 more than 6 months ago, as I did ? I'm also curious in which country the M8's are going to be delivered first. I believe the largest demand is coming from the US. paul_barker Posted October 23, 2006 Share #19 Posted October 23, 2006 Apparently, I am number 15 or 16 on the list with a main dealer in London. Ordered about 3 months ago. They did say then, that in reality, it would be the new year before I would see it. So I'm being patient and treating it as a late Christmas present. Looking on the bright side, this means Guy, and others, will have had them a month, helped iron out any bugs and I should get one with the next firmware version .
