MP-3 / À-LA-CARTE 50mm Framelines

Hi,

i read that the MP-3 special-edition has the more "accurate" (larger) 50mm framelines (as M2,M3 and M4s used to have).

What about the 50mm frame in the 3-frame or 5-frame à la carte option. Is it larger than the one in the 6-frame-option?

i am about to get rid of the 75mm-frame in my MP and a more accurate 50mm frame would very much justify the cost of this "surgery".

as most of my work is done with a 50mm lens at infinity-focus (city- and landscapes) the standard frameline is really bothering me.

regards,

d.

get the MP-3 frame lines - they are much better for infinity use. The a la carte ones I suspect are the same as standard, just some are missing etc. The difference in size is quite remarkable and an MP-3 50mm frameline in a .85 MP would be the ideal (or a M3!!!)

could not believe how tiny the .72 std 50mm lines were after using the 0.85. The MP-3 almost seems closer to the 0.85 than the 0.72 in size!

yes, I'd love to have the MP-3 frame lines, but i think the only option i have is getting the standard frame-mask replaced with one of the "à la carte"-masks.

sure, i could get a MP-3 or M3, but that's a pretty expensive option.

i already wrote to leica about this but no answer yet.

Do you know both, the 0.85 finder and the MP-3? Are the frames different?

The bottem line of the 50mm frame isn`t complet, just some mm in the edges. This makes no sense in this camera, it makes sense in a 0.85 finder because of the meter lamps. Maybe they took the 50mm 0.85 frame to MP-3 to fit 24x36mm at 0.72?

If so, it could be an option for el.nino?

unfourtunately i think this won't be an option.

the frame-masks are always the same (through all viewfinder-magnifications), it's just the magnification itself that changes.

in fact the frame-mask (for all six frames) consists only of two pieces of thin aluminium where the lines are cut out.

the one in the MP-3 was a special one (3 frames only) with a larger 50mm "cutout".

have not got any answer from leica yet if the à-la-carte-3-frame-version is identical to the MP-3-version.

I still find the incomplete 50mm frame for the MP-3 much easier to work with than the tiny cluttered one in the standard camera. You would be amazed. The 35mm frame is not far from where the 28 normally is which makes you realise how poor the view for a 28 is on a standard 0.72 finder.

A Leica 1.25 magnifier attached to an MP3 with a mounted 50mm is perfect - remove it when you switch to your 35 mm lens - then you have the best of both worlds - a .72 finder (no magnifier) - and - a .90 finder (magnifier attached) - same camera. No wonder the magnifiers are hard to find - but the best finder lines of all time came with the M4.
