ho_co Posted February 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Panasonic 18 mm (equiv) wide-angle adapter is quite lightweight and easy to use. It doesn't even seem to make much difference in exposure (these images received the same exposure). Image quality isn't stellar, but IMO not bad considering what a difference it makes in field of view. What I found most disappointing in using the conversion lens is that the mounting threads of the D-Lux 4 body are plastic. The casting (if that's what it is) is a couple millimeters thick and is probably adequate to the purpose, but I wonder how it's attached inside. (Listening, Mr Norton? ) The camera wasn't square to the wall, so there are both a slight tilt and converging verticals and horizontals. Images are made from Capture One TIFFs because that procedure corrects the camera lens aberrations better than others. The WA converter introduces its own aberrations which, of course, the camera can't correct. However, the worst effects (particularly of the CA) are seen outside the image that you could get with the lens alone, so no direct comparison is possible. The shots are at 16:9, both the D-Lux 4's widest field of view and also the mode with smallest pixel count. Considering the geometry of the camera's three aspect ratios, the vertical edges should have the worst performance at 16:9 and the horizontal edges the worst at 4:3, because they run closest to the edge of the lens' illumination circle. Since 3:2 has a shape between those two, I would guess that the poorest performance should be more constrained to the corners when using that format. Additional barrel distortion and color fringing are apparent: Picture 3: 100% enlargement of upper left corner of Picture 1: Picture 4: 100% enlargement of upper left corner of Picture 2: These images were given no post-processing except downsizing and converting to JPG. The wide-angle attachment definitely adds distortion and chromatic aberration, but these can largely be controlled in post. Personally, I find the quality trade-off acceptable considering the much larger field of view the adapter affords, but YMMV.
