An update as of 17 Feb 09: This weekend, while shooting some candids inside a restaurant, I was scale-focusing my "PanaLeica" hybrid (the LC1 body with D2 PC board) and to my surprise, I noticed the area of sharpest focus was about 1/3 the distance indicated on the lens. Investingating further, I also discovered the camera wouldn't focus at infinity, but only out to 30' or so.

When I got home, I immediately checked my "LeicaPan" hybrid (the D2 body with LC1 PC board) and discovered that it wouldn't focus any closer than about 3' and focused at infinity when the lens scale indicated ~10' ... hmmm. "This is weird," I thought to myself. "How can the PC board have any effect on the accuracy of manual focusing?" I can certainly understand how it might effect the autofocusing accuracy, but it was my understanding that manual focus on these cameras was just that -- manual -- and not focus-by-wire, as is the case with the L1/D3. If so, then it should be a completely mechanical process and the camera's electronics should have no effect whatsoever on the focusing accuracy.

Apparently not, though, because I swapped the PC boards whence they came and -- voila! -- both cameras now focus accurately again. Clearly, this means these cameras are focus-by-wire and the PC boards must be adjusted somehow to focus properly with any given lens. When I get my other computer running again, I will check the service manual and see what it says about this.
