carbonadam Posted January 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone know where is a good place to drop off 35mm film, get it developed, and have the negs scanned to a CD at decent quality. I just went to target today and thought it was great it cost only a few bucks until I got home and found 1500X1000 pixel scans. Any suggestions? I live on the east coast, USA. Thanks. Online is fine too but i do not want to break the bank.
Advertisement Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Hi carbonadam, Take a look here 35mm film developed and scanned to CD?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tgray Posted February 1, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2009 I used to use target all the time, then they started to charge a lot more ($6-7) while at the same time, they started to mangle my film. I'm now using Digital Photo Printing San Francisco Bay Area Photography Services | Photoworks. They send you free mailers. They develop and scan for about $9, cut your negs into strips of 6, put them in print file sheets, and send you an index print. For an extra dollar or two, you can get higher res scans, but I find the size perfect for flickr and such. If I want more, I just scan them at home. carbonadam Posted February 1, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted February 1, 2009 Thanks. I was actually looking at the scans and they are not that bad. I am just a sucker for the biggest resolution possible. target only charged me $2.50 for 24 exposures for developing and burning to a cd. here is a link to some of the shots: FILM - a set on Flickr They are not shot with a Leica, but that is because I am waiting for my M7 body to arrive. I used a Nikon F4 and a very old Olympus rangefinder. I am also eagerly awaiting a old Minolta XE-7 body and lens. That was the first SLR I ever shot with decades ago. tgray Posted February 1, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2009 Honestly if Target is only charging you $2ish for development and scans, and they don't mangle your film, stick with it. I was doing that for a while and then I moved. The new Target here charges 2 or 3 for development, and a 3 or 4 for the CD/scans. On top of that, they were exposing the first 4 or 5 frames to light as they pulled the film leader out of the can. So just totally unacceptable. Actually, I don't even think they dev film here anymore. The scans that minilabs do tend to blow out highlights a bit. Nothing serious, but never quite capture whats on the neg. But perfectly fine for flickr type stuff. Nice shots!
carbonadam Posted February 1, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted February 1, 2009 Thanks. My wife thinks they may have undercharged me. Next time I go I'll see if the price is the same. I make sure the film is in the roll so they can not do any damage by accident. I am not sure how they get the leader out though. I thought they just plop the roll in a machine that does all the work. iridium7777 Posted February 2, 2009 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2009 i'm in connecticut. every target here is 1.99$ for develop + scan only, but the quality is crap and they're not the best to handle your film (1.5mb file) i go to walgreens pharmacy and they do the same for 5.50$ but the scans are better and they're better with film too (2.5mb file) then there's costo, which is something like $4.50 and have the highest resolution scans (4mb file). i'm surprised that your target charges that much. 97% of my stuff comes from walgreens, with the rest now coming from costo. i don't go to target anymore. carbonadam Posted February 2, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted February 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm in Albany, NY. There is no Costco near me but I will head to Wallgreens next time. Thanks.
paga Posted February 2, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2009 WOW, that's pretty good considering here in NYC one has to pay $10 or more for nearly the same at Duggal... OK they never mangled my films, and the resolution might be higher although I only use it for web (not printing/enlarging) so I would have to check. Cheers! andybarton Posted February 2, 2009 Share #9 Posted February 2, 2009 Supermarkets over here charge about 12 of your dollars for dev, print and low res CD If you can still find one, a processor charges about 18 still low res. High res scans cost about $90 a film.
carbonadam Posted February 2, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted February 2, 2009 $90! Insane. Who is paying that? After a few rolls you could buy a scanner, and after a few rolls more you could buy an even better scanner. Where do you live? Where is this world wide recession I keep hearing about and how does a service like that stay in business? Even at $12 it's nuts.
paga Posted February 2, 2009 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2009 Yes This is why I bought a nice film scanner myself, easy math!
