As no one appears to know the bloke, I suggest to concentrate on the location. Even knowing who he is I was unable to locate that particular representation in the Web. :o

This is another view of the same building complex. A tiny bit of this clock was visible in the preceding picture.

Thighslapper - you've got it. Please post the next puzzle.

Here is a less severe crop of my location. Unfortunately, I had aimed just for the face. Only when at home did I notice that I had lost part of the memorial at the bottom right. Happily, I could still use the shot for this thread.

"Nansen Passport" is the term to use when googling. The bloke is, of course, Fridtjof Nansen. The person named in the passport is one of many thousand who were given a new life by the means of a Nansen Passport.

I would think we are looking in west direction. Given your earlier posts one could think that it is from the outskirts of the forest you mentioned. If that's true it could be Biblisheim or Walbourg

Isn't that the name Leo next to the left figure?... 'Leo papa' it says. Pope Leo IX by any chance? Born at Egisheim, near Colmar, on June 21, 1002?

I agree. It does say "LEO NONUS PAPA" which would be Pope Leo IX, indeed.

the Abbey of St Odile is correct Phillip.... your turn again

the figure on the right is Abbess Eugenia (which you can read) who succeeded her aunt, St Odilia who founded the Nunnery in the 12th Century.

There are panoramic views on the Rhine Valley eastwards and the Vosges on the west. Its a very pretty place....

Thank you, thighslapper. The Abbess Eugenia was indeed very helpful indeed in locating the site. :D

Here's another one. They say that this view is quite distinctive.
