correct.... !!! well done !!

you had popes, well and orvieto so there could be no other place.

The Pozzo di San Patrizio or St. Patrick's Well is in Orvieto (Italy) and was built at the order of Pope Clement VII between 1527 and 1537 to provide an additional source of water in case of disaster or siege. Orvieto lies on a porous volcanic 'tufo' plateau and is honeycombed with old wells, initially dug by the etruscans, down to the water table below the tufo. This is the largest of the lot.

Access to the water is provided by two large spiral ramps with shallow broad sloping steps, served by two separate doors, which allowed mules to carry the water up one spiral and return down the other without passing each other. Its was completely carved out of the tufo with no brickwork apart from bit above ground and the paving on the steps. Anything else you see is repair work. There are 248 steps so going up is a hard slog after the easy excitement of the descent. Be warned that the exit has a very narrow rotating turnstile and if you are even moderately overweight you will be unable to get out !!

The well is 53 metres deep and the water at the bottom looks pretty undrinkable.....

The previous pics show the Albornoz Fortress built in the 1350's which overlooks Orvieto Scala which is the bit of new orvieto below the old town, and the lion is on the Cathedral or Duomo which is very similar to the one in Florence.

You would be entertained to know Robert that Orvieto seemed to have more Americans in it than Italians when we were there !! .... there was presumably some summer school or other convention like affair going on.....

a couple more pics (looking down this time) then over to you Robert....

"Orvieto seemed to have more Americans in it than Italians when we were there !!"

Ah, well ... you know us Yanks !

Actually, back in my college days, I studied for half a year in Cortona, located approx. 95 km across the Val di Chiana from Orvieto. Some places are relatively simple to identify if you've been there before.

Ok, here's my posting. What's the name of this State Park in the U.S.? It's heavily visited, so this should be fairly easy.

Too obscure ... ?

ok ... it's in close proximity to a large urban area located west of the Rockies.

That narrows it down to three states.
