Guest suilvenman Posted September 23, 2009 Share #2249 Posted September 23, 2009 You're in the right area, William. Anyone who has driven on the motorway from northern Europe down the Rhone corridor to get to Spain will have passed within a few kilometres of this place. Cheers, Ken. Guest suilvenman Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2252 Posted September 24, 2009 Oops. I can see I'm just a babe in the woods in this game - I didn't realise that it was possible to do that. (William, Frans, just among the three of us, could you tell me how you did that. I won't say a word to anyone else, I promise.) Go on then, William or Frans, let's have the answer. Cheers, Ken. Guest suilvenman Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2255 Posted September 24, 2009 Sorry guys but I think we'll need to put this one down to a learning experience for me. I wasn't aware that it was possible for others to view file download data, which in this case included the place identity. Could some please advise me whether it's worthwhile continuing with this one or shall we put it out of its misery. Cheers, Ken.
Guest WPalank Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2256 Posted September 24, 2009 I pass it to Frans. I'm on a Mac. What I did was simply drag it to my desktop and it is named "rivesaltes #1026.jpg". Take her away Frans as you took the time to look it up on Wikipedia. Ken, don't worry about it, it's just the detective in me that looks at these things from every angle. Guest suilvenman Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2257 Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) No worries, William. Honestly, I'm very grateful for all the information, advice and ideas I've absorbed since joining the LUF. I use a newly acquired desktop mac myself and I'm still finding my way around it so I'd better not admit this faux pas to my son - I'd never hear the end of it. Yes, the answer is the Camp Joffre in Rivesaltes, southern France. The camp started life as a military base, then, during the 30s, it served as a holding centre for Spanish Republicans fleeing Franco's troops. During the Vichy years, it became a transit camp for Jews, gypsies and any others deemed undesirable by the Vichy authorities, before they were transported on to Auschwitz. During the 60s and for the next decade, it was used to "accommodate" Harkis (native muslim Algerian supporters of the French government in Algeria) who, after having to flee their country after independence in '62, were considered by de Gaulle to be unworthy of being integrated into mainland France. Frans, over to you. Cheers, Ken. Edited September 24, 2009 by suilvenman

Not to worry. I thought it was amusing. I don't think it is the first time this happened. I once guessed a place in Singapore because I could see the name of the city on a building sign... I'll look for something 'nameless'. ------------------ Frans
