Loose Hardware on the D-Lux 4 - normal?

I just purchased the D-Lux 4 yesterday, and I noticed that when the lens is not retracted, there is a noticeable clicking sound when I gently wiggle it. And I mean really gently!

Is anybody else experiencing this problem? Or is it a common faulty trait of the D-Lux 4?

Hello Jeannie,

Congrats on your new purchase. Looking forward to seeing some photos from it here.

I don't have a DL4 but do have a DL3. The lens when extended does wiggle a bit, this is normal. But there's no clicking sound on mine. Not sure if this is normal for the DDL4 but am sure some other members will help you out on that.

If possible, take it back to the dealer you bought it from and let him check it.

Regards

Firoze

Jeannie--

Mine rattles a bit if I wiggle it, but remember that the parts have to have some wiggle-room in order to zoom and focus. Digicams are all built more lightly than most of us are used to. :(

Hard to diagnose from a distance, but yours is probably okay. Still, it's enough to bother you, so if you can, you should have your dealer check it as Firoze suggested.

My complaint is a loose mode dial. It's got a little more wobble than I like, but others apparently have a similar looseness in the dial, so I'm not going to worry about it.

The camera really does take good pictures, though, doesn't it?

Jeannie,

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but since the topic was mentioned, I'm commenting on ho_co's complaint below.

My complaint is a loose mode dial.....

Yeah all the D-Lux models suffer from this issue. This, as well as the aspect ratio and auto-focus switches on the barrel. Its hard to find a camera where all three of these are tight - one or the other is usually loose. I wish Leica/Panasonic would sort this out - I've lost many good pictures because one or other of these switches was inadvertently moved.

No it's not hijacked at all :)

Okay, so the lens are suppose to wiggle a bit. I guess I will have to be extra careful not to drop it.

I will admit the mode dial is loose very loose, but I don't seem to have a problem with my auto focus and aspect ratio dials. Maybe because they're tucked closer to the camera where it's harder to accidently hit.

Jeannie, I do think you should take your DL4 back to the dealer, a very loose dial would bug you in the long run, inadvertently moving off setting. Still, its up to you, if you think you can live with it, that"s fine :)

I never even checked mine as I have mounted a lense tube that converts from 46 MM to 52MM. Got it from West Coast Cameras. Was $50 USD but comes with a nice pedal lense sunshade. Made in China but VERY nicely done. Only trouble if you are shooting a flash shot with the lense zoomed all the way in. You do see a shadow from the tube. Solution; unscrew the tube! So, I wont worry about dropping the camera or something bumping the lense with the tube on the camera.

I see you live in Van city, so you're probably more familiar with that place than me. It was taken at the first lake of the Joffree Lakes Provincial Park in Pemberton, BC with a Cannon EOS of some sort. I can't take credit for it, since I am the subject matter there :)

firoze - You're right, I really should get it checked out just to be sure that my mode dial isn't extra loose.

I don't consider the dials on my DL4 loose at all. They have firm detents, and when I rub my finger over them they don't move unless I wnat them to.

By the way, I ordered a Lug Mount Wrist Strap form Gordy's and I am very pleased with it. If you should decide to order one one be sure to get the O-ring Bumper also. It will keep your camera from getting scratched, and looks great on my Black DL4. Look for his ad here on the Forum.

Peter and Jim,

You are both fortunate to have firm dials. My D-Lux 3 also has firm dials but the one I have was the third my dealer un-boxed for my satisfaction, the first two had one or the other dial loose.

Jeannie,

I hope you get your camera sorted out... best wishes.

Regards to all

Although my mode dial is a bit wobbly as I said above, the dials don't move by accident. (My problem is forgetting that I left the camera in some aspect ratio that isn't my usual. :) )

Thanks for that, Jim. I've been thinking that would be a good choice and am glad to get the confirmation.
