D-Lux4 vs dSLR

Hello. I am brand new to this forum. I currently have a Nikon D90 and use primarily my 50mm lens or my 17-50mm zoom. I prefer a more photo journalistic style of photography (street photography too) and find that my D90 does not allow me to be discreet. I don't have the budget yet for a M8 or M8.2 and am wondering if the D-Lux4 is a great alternate to the D90 until my budget improves. I am new to Leica and am looking for the pro's and con's by those of you who have experience with both.

Thank you for your time,

Melissa

I have a D300 which is a wonderful camera but I wanted a camera that I can carry around with me everyday and has some good features for adjusting WB and low light shooting. The D-Lux4 is a great camera for that. The wide angle and f/2-2.8 lens just rocks. Great B&W and Vivid color setups. Get it you won't be disappointed. Heck I am bringing it to Africa this May along with my D300 just to carry with me at all times.

I find the D-Lux 4 a fantastic alternative to a DLSR or more advance digital camera. What makes the D-Lux 4 an alternative is the great IQ, F 2.0 lens and RAW capture. The fact that the camera is well made and has great <retro> case options are real pluses. Don't be fooled into thinking that the D-Lux 4 is a DSLR/M8 replacement; it is not. Nevertheless, it is about as good as current point shoots get.

I am using a D-Lux 4 Titan as well as my Sony A700 equipped with a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA Lens, and the photos from the D-Lux 4 are getting very close. I have the sharpening set to the +1 setting with no noticeable noise at 100 ISO. I have tried the +2 setting also, and it gets really close to the DSLR combination. Amazing photo fidelity and superbly made - a winning combination in my book.

Although I'm not a photojournalist, I have the D-Lux 4 AND a V-Lux 1 and use both. I really the 4 over the 1 because of size, but when I need that 420MM lense, the V-Lux 1 gets busy. They both take great photos but I like the D-Lux 4 better. I use the V-Lux 1 in place of a large DSLR. Throw in an 8G card and have an extra battery in your pocket & you're good to go for a complete day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm officially DSLR free. The DLUX4 is finally a camera that does it all. I can have an optical VF, great auto ISO, fast focus, and a great looking high ISO grain. I owned a D700 and the high ISO images just never looked real to me.

Melissa-

it actually happen some of my friends that work in media field, they all have either d-lux4 or lx3 with them. they all said it's good enough for dairy work when the photographer is not around. so i guess it will do the job just fine.

Peter-

thanks for the tips, i'm gonna try the method that you mentioned above

I too am close to pulling the trigger on a DL4 purchase. I am a long time photographer and just want a high quality camera that is portable and versatile. I recently purchased a used Fuji S3 Pro. I found it to be slow, big and clumsy. I found using it to be far from enjoyable. With what I have read on this forum as well as the various photographs taken by Leica Photographers with this camera, I have high hopes for the DL4.

I now have my d-lux4 and it is getting way more use than my D90. I love taking this everywhere I go and the images are incredible. I am having so much fun with the dynamic black & white that I keep the camera in this setting the majority of the time. I still find a need every once in a while for my dslr but could be happy without it. A M8 would be a dream camera for me.

I've had my DL 4 for about ten weeks now,in my opinion far superior to the Panasonic FX150 and Fujifilm F810 that preceded it. If only it incorporated an optical VF (as has that Fujifilm camera ... the only shortcoming. Marvellous in every other way.
