I "Think" all these new problems people are seeing is because of the older style DX reader. Leica updated it on new cameras to a optical reader, on cameras produced around the time the MP came out. The old style has spring loaded pins along the inside of the cassette area.

Leica is updating old camera to the new optical reader for free.

I just had my M7 done and it should be in my hands today. That is after almost 3 months in Solms.

I think I cannot afford 3 months without the only Leica I own...

They will still fix older DX readers under warranty.

I'll soon find out. My M7 had the "AUTO" (aperture priority) fail. When I talked to the service center in NJ and mentioned I'd like the optical DX reader, he said it would have to go back to Solms for about 6 weeks for that, but mentioned no price. This is week one I'm waiting for the call with an estimate. Maybe I should call them?

Just got my M7 back today. Sent it out to Leica NJ 7/8/09 (that is July 8th) and they contacted me about sending it back to Germany for the DX reader update.

Working Ok but I had to change out the batteries. The meter was fluctuating in lower light areas. Going form 1/30-1/60 to 1/250-1/360 and back hitting almost all the stops on the way. Since I didn't have any batteries with me when I got home I changed the batteries it has stopped. Reader is changed and working well, washer installed on the base plate and what looks to be a new spring in the center of take up spool that may have been there but I had never noticed it before. They also did a cursory cleaning, checked and adjusted the shutter & meter and adjusted the rangefinder.

Cost, $00.00.

Thank you Leica

They also did the mini-CLA on mine and the cam was returned in excellent shape. Thank you to Leica from me too! :)

@John Maio: I would just leave it alone for the time being. If you don't hear from them Leica are almost certainly doing it for nowt.
