I am working my way thru the Manual on my dlux4 (just got it). I noticed it can take up to a 32 gb SDHC card. is there any measurable difference in getting a class 4 SDHC card vs. a class 6 SDHC card. I plan on shooting mostly RAW images.

Thank you in advance

wiki has some info about SD card that you might interest

can check it out here

Thanks, I have already read it on wiki. Class 6 is faster then Class 4, but I didn't know if the Dlux 4 has a maximum write speed, so I guess my question should have been, does any one know the maximum write speed for the dlux 4 to a SDHC card?

Thanks in advance

Glenn

Hi,

I don't think it is a question of the maximum write speed of the D-LUX 4 since I believe all SDHC device writers should be capable of write speeds up to the theoretical maximum of the SDHC standard. That is, if they are to adhere to the SDHC standard.

So rather, I think it is a question of what is the maximum class speed the SDHC standard can support. Whatever this is, the D-LUX 4 should still support it. This is my understanding, but I may be wrong.

On another note, SDXC is the next standard (debuted at CES2009) which will support storage capacities greater than 32GB and I wonder what are the maximum speeds supported by this new standard.

Welcome to the forum, Mr D4!

Differing read/write speed is the difference between classes of SDHC cards. A Class 6 is faster than a Class 4.

But the question then comes down to the speed of one's cardreader and computer bus, and to the camera's write speed.

In the past month or so, one of the forum members--I've forgotten whom--posted the results of his experience with the M8. There's a particular cut-off where a faster card doesn't mean a quicker write from the M8. (Again, I've forgotten his conclusion since I've already got a set of cards.)

At any rate, all it will take is for someone to sit down with a Class 4 and a Class 6 card in the D-Lux 4 and see how big the speed difference is (if any).

Thanks for the input, I went ahead and got a 16GB class 6 card. Although I have no comparison, shooting at 10MP RAW, objectively the card writes less than a second. the "writing to card" icon flashes briefly on the screen.

Wow, Glenn, good move!

Now I'll have to try a couple cards myself!

I was hoping someone else would compare a couple different speeds and post the results here. I've got a couple 4GB Class 4, and I don't think they're that fast on the D-Lux 4.

Thanks for the info!

Definitely not my experience. I use a Class 6 card, and the "writing to card" icon flashes five times on screen between exposures. I would estimate the time to be between 2.5 and 3 seconds (this is for RAW). Just as interesting, I can only get 3 frames in burst mode until the shutter locks up. With JPEG, burst will go forever (well, I stopped at 22 frames just now, but I assume it would have kept on going!). So I don't find the camera to be particularly responsive in RAW write times, or to have a very large buffer.

Does the D-Lux 3 support these Class VI SDHC cards?

I don't have a DL3, but I would imagine you could use a class 6 in the DL3, but not sure if the DL3 could take full advantage of the class 6 SCHC cards speed.
