Panasonic DMC-G1 / Leica D2 size comparison

My G1 arrived at my office today and when I got home tonight, I decided to see how it measured up to my D2 ... literally! As you can see, the G1 is smaller than the D2 in all dimensions and significantly lighter to boot. I can't comment upon its image quality, ease or use, or any operational aspects at this point, except to say the G1 doesn't feel as comfortable in my (fairly large) hands as the D2, I'm still not enthusiastic about its pseudo-DSLR styling, and I know already I'll miss the D2's fast f2 lens, built-in bounce flash, and nearly silent shutter.

On the other hand, it cost me only $599 brand new with a warranty (less than I paid for my D2 last summer), so it's not like I'll be out a lot of money if I'm not happy with it. Oh, and the G1's EVF is in another class entirely from the D2's EVF ... seriously. We'll see...

Hmmmm. Know which one l would prefer in my hands, and it's not the G1. But what the heck, this is from a guy who dumped the D2 for the R8/DMR combo, switched to a M8, then onto a Nikon D2 and all the way back to the Leica Digilux 2. Shed load of money spent proving that his first decision was the right one for him

I certainly accept that the Digilux 2 can provide fine images thanks to a fine sensor/lens match but in most other respects, it's showing its age. Terrible EVF makes chimping a necessity, unbelievably sluggish and difficult to judge the release point, so hopeless for sports or moving subjects.

I find the G1 much more comfortable to hold, bigger sensor, more MP, much better EVF and folding screen. Faster, plus the real benefit of being able to put other lenses on it. What I don't know yet is whether the letters will wear off the lens rings as they do on the Digilux 2.

For those who don't like the design of the G1, the slab-sided Digilux 3 was, to my eyes, no beauty.

Logic dictates that I agree with you on all counts (although I found my DMC-L1 to be reasonably attractive), but emotionally, the D2's all-manual controls will be something I miss dearly should the G1 replace it as my carry-everywhere camera. I came of age during the era of all-manual cameras and while I appreciate auto-focus for what it is, I still find considerable appeal to focusing images myself. We'll see...

For the last two weeks or more, I've been using nothing BUT manual focus with the G1, and as others have noted, it's a revelation -- more accurate than any rangefinder. Get yourself an adapter to use M-mount lenses on the G1, and then you'll have a choice of many, many f2 or faster lenses that equal or better the quality of the excellent D2 zoom.

Is metering retained with the adaptor?

It is, but I think with certain limitations. To be honest, I haven't read up on the details of this, but I find that when working in aperture-priority mode, as I almost always do, I get very accurate metering just by pointing the camera at the area I want to meter, depressing the shutter button part way to lock in it in, and then recomposing (if necessary) before completing the release. It's intuitive, like using the AE function on a Hexar rf or Zeiss Ikon. I guess I should research this in the manual, but as it works almost to perfection, I don't really care what the camera is thinking about during this process.

The only problem is that I generally prefer a wide angle of view -- 24-28mm equivalent -- and there are no fast 12-14mm lenses available with sufficiently large image circles to cover the sensor (or if there are, then I don't know of them). Although they're not quite speed demons (hah!), I do plan to use my CV 12mm and 15mm lenses with the G1 as they will turn it into a very compact camera for my type of street photography.

Alas, I've agreed to send my camera off to Mike Johnson at TOP so that he can review it, so it'll be a few weeks yet before I get to play with it. :(

Yes, fast wide angles are lacking thus far, but Panasonic is scheduled to make a 20 f1.7 (equiv. 40) early this year, and I will be surprised if they, or Olympus or Leica, don't soon come up with something wider, maybe at f2. Then you'd have the best of both worlds for street shooting -- very compact, fast outfit with autofocus.

As for focus confirmation with M-lens + adapter on the G1, I am not getting that with any of the lenses I've been using. But I doubt that focus confirmation would be as precise as what I see for myself using manual focus with magnification, which, with a wide-open 1.4 lens, lets me determine exactly what I want to be sharp. You know how this works, right?

just a heads up

the rumour on Oly mFT is for 2 bodies, M1 and M100.

1. M-1, will have a weather-sealed body, 3.2-inch display, HD-video record (720p, 1080i, 1080p) and will be come on the market with the lens 12-45/2.4-3.5 (filter diameter 62mm, weight 410gr)

2. The second is M-100, which we have seen as a mock-up - no weather sealing / kit lens 14-70/3.5-5.6

congratulations on the new G1. despite the popular opinion, i think micro4/3 is an inspired format. if the G1 was boxy like the D2, i would have bought one (maybe 2). (i cannot handle the ergometric (??) body styles).

whenever you attach your CV 12mm and 15mm lenses, please post your comments.

i have the CV15mm (i use on a Bessa T) and would love to attach it to a digital camera (but which camera?).
