abrewer Posted January 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had some bad 'flare' on night photos I shot outside in the cold around Christmastime Looking at the 50 ASPH's front element behind the filter I could see a faint, light, defect in the coating I unscrewed the filter and rubbed gently with my index over the defect Horrors! It was still there!!! Panicked, I went from the store where I was shooting to the truck; opened the door and pulled out a Kleenex (!!! EEEK! God please forgive me for even thinking of doing this!!!) and put a little spit on the end of my covered index finger I rubbed the moistened tissue over the defect There was a blur, then a smear of blue and purple and a hazy film that lifted to reveal that all had been.... SNOT! There was a dribble of snot on my front element and it came right off with the hankie Life makes me so anxious at times

azzo Posted January 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2009 "How did it get there?" He must have sneezed and used the lens to cover his nose instead of a tissue!

hoppyman Posted January 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 25, 2009 There are even more heart attack inducing 50 ASPH. moments Allan. I keep my lenses in back to back glued rear caps. In cold conditions I was changing lenses, holding camera and other lens in one hand while putting away another into my satchel. I inserted the bayonet of the removed lens into the empty cap and skrinched it around to engage the bayonet. Except it wasn't the vacant rear cap, it was the open front of my 50 ASPH. with hood extended. When I realised what was wrong and after the para medics revived me, I looked in the front of the 50. It has a UV/IR which is why I didn't immediately commit seppuku by leaping off the tall tower where I was, above Las Vegas. I took the filter off and saw NO marks at all. Maybe the lens hood was deep enough to prevent contact. Whew! Then I dropped the filter and dinged the thread. Sigh.
