doubice Posted January 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 5, 2009 Hello, And welcome to the forum! The lens appears to be the second generation of the 2.8/28mm Elmarit, produced in 1985. Rear element does not protrude as deep into the body as the one of the first version and metering with the M7 should be more accurate. I have not tried the first version with metered Leica bodies but, the deeply protruding rear element could block the meter's view of the white spot on the shutter curtain. This will not be a problem on the 1541562 lens. Best, Jan

doubice Posted January 5, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 5, 2009 You are absolutely right. Sorry, its 37931314. Any ideas? As a new user, i'm just overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge one can find in here. Thanks. Sorry - I stand corrected serial number 1541562 belongs to a lens produced in 1957. I managed to read the wrong column in my lens bible. The 2.8/28mm Elmarit did not even exist yet. The second serial number, 37 931 314 is definitely wrong - one digit too many. You can input the correct serial number into the search window of this excellent site: LEICA and you most probably will get an answer to your query. This is a French site but, quite selfexplanatory. The correct number format will probably be 3 793 xxx, which dates the lens to very late 1980's or early 1990's. Best, Jan
lars_bergquist Posted January 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 5, 2009 If it is actually a v.III 28mm Elmarit (1980--1993) then it is worth having. I used it until I exchanged it for a Summicron. The earlier versions are really not worth bothering with. The old man from the Age of Max Berek
LeonardT Posted January 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) If the 3 793 xxx number is correct, it would be a version IV, the last version before the Elmarit Asph. Resolution and contrast are beautiful. I actually prefer it to the Summicron. It is my favorite lens which I also use for infrared photography with the M8. The Summicron will give you a hot spot, the Elmarit will not. Len
