problem with my new MP?

Hi folks,

I picked up a new MP yesterday, but I think something is wrong with it.

When I attached the first lens to it, a 35mm asph, and twisted to click it on, I noticed that the lens is actually a bit loose after clicking in place. I can actually move it a little.

I tried all my other lenses, and they vary from fairly tight to not-so-tight. Just this one lens is very loose. I can twist it a bit back and forth, and if I shake the camera I can hear it move. It will even move a bit as I use the focus ring.

I was surprised by all of this, because on my M8, the lens mount is very snug and secure, no movement at all and a nice tight feeling when a lens is attached.

The dealer opens at 11am today, so I will be calling him for a probable replacement, but I wanted to check in here for opinions.

I have had similar issues with ASPH lenses being loose on one camera or cameras but not on others. I think it is a tolerance issue and I'm more inclined to blame the lens than the body. My 75/2 is particularly bad but luckily the one body it is tight on is the 0.85x mag MP which is the body I want to use it on. I keep on putting off sending it to DAG for a fix.

I would take the loose lens/camera combination to your dealer and ask them their opinion. I'd be interested to hear it too.

There is a spring system inside the lens mount on the camera that is supposed to hold the lens tight to the body. If this one lens is not being held tight to the body then the either the spring system is weak or the lens mount is not thick enough. Not the way it is supposed to be.

If the lens just rotated CCW/CW slightly that is normal to a point.

In any event I'd take that camera back to where you got it with that lens and see if another one they have is any better. If it is tell them you want to exchange it.

Let the dealer work it out Leica.

I did notice the feeling of a spring on the MP, which I don't notice on the M8.

In fact when I press the lens release button on the MP, when I have some lenses on, the spring will push against and rotate the lens, but with the 35mm asph on the MP, when I press the release there is no push against the lens.

On the M8 there is no lens movement at all with any lens when I press the release button.

What I'm talking about can be viewed through the lens mount on the camera with the lens removed. Just to the left, CW, of each slot the lens slips through to mount it there is a spring. It bends down towards that slot and then raises up so the lens can start locking one at the low end of it.
