I am considering picking up the Oly FL 36 flash (the newer R version doesn't seem to make a difference when not used with an Oly body) and wondering if it would be compatible with all three of my digital Leicas. Does anyone have experience using it with any of the above? Comments and tips would be much appreciated. thanks!

Digilux 3 and D-Lux 4 have an Olympus pattern hotshoe, and that should be fine and work as TTL flash. The FL36 doesnt offer any advantage to you, so if you can find a FL36 instead you would save some money there.

Digilux 2 has a Leica pattern hotshoe, the FL36 will not work other than manual/auto mode, it is dumb as it doesnt have communication to the camera. You should see on the flash LCD that it wont light up as TTL AUTO mode.

Here it is on my LC1

I dont know if its 'safe' to use, but I have used mine on the similar Panasonic LC1 without issue.

Its very easy to use even manually, just set the aperture by rotating the wheel on the flash to match the aperture desired. Dont forget to adjust the flash zoom via the zoom button on the flash and select the closest option there.

The flash can be set to AUTO via the mode botton, but all this does is use the built in thyristor circuitry to cut off the flash signal, but its handy for bounce flash.

thanks for the info Riley! it was very helpful. i'm looking for a used one on ebay as i write this.

The FL40 also works well, subject to the same limitations as the FL36, and I managed to find a NOS one on eBay for less than the going rate for a used FL36. In other words, unless you're in a hurry, you might do well to be patient and take your time...

For what its worth, The FL36 seems to work perfect with my Digilux3 and also with the D-lux4,

Interestingly, I have been told repeatedly that the D-lux4 do not have TTL, however when I pop the FL36 on it, the flash automatically set to TTL mode and zooms with the D-lux4.

I just finished posting a picture of this rig at BoPhoto.com

I use my FL-36 on my Leica V-Lux 1 and its just peachy. You can use it manually (altho I'm at a loss as to why you'd want to) or TTL. Either way, it works fine. It was a nice surprise, since I've had the FL-36 for years, while the V-Lux 1 is only a few months old.
