Problems with Digilux3

My Digilux 3 has stopped taking pictures!! It behaves normally when I take a picture, the shutter works and it sounds like the “mirror action” is normal but the pictures all comes out black.

The live view function does not work either, it’s all black.

It behaves just like I have the lens cap on (which I don’t)

Anyone else experienced this before?

What shall I do?

I remember something of this sort happened not with my D/3 but with my L1, which is basically the same camera after all.

Last Summer I was shooting near a lake when I did some chimping and noticed the last few pix were all black. Camera seemed to be working normally, took out the lens, power cycled it, put a fresh battery in it, even reset the camera, but to no avail. Eventually after getting out of LiveView everything suddenly started to work again.

The only thing I do remember is that I had been using the LV feature, but also that not all the black pix had been taken with it.

Since then I noticed a quirk about LV that happens alike with my L1 and D/3, both with the latest firmware:

1) you can get out of the LV *without* closing it, I mean without pushing again the LV button, but via some other button, menu or whatever

2) if you do "shorten" LV this way the camera behaves sort of erratically 'till you get back into LV and exit it with the LV button.

Now, I'm not sure this LV issue has been the cause of that failure, but at the moment it seemed to have some relation to it. Anyway, while I can replicate the problem with LV, I've not been able to get the black pix again.

As a suggestion, I'd power cycle the camera, get in & out LV via the LV button, switch off and unmount and mount again the lens and the card. As a last action I could also suggest to reset the camera to the "factory setting" via the menu and delete any custom setup that has been saved.

I sure did all of this, but to say what and if any of this has helped is unclear to me, fact is that my camera has been working flawlessly since then. Just that LV quirk still holds true, but now I always remember to exit via the LV button.

Best of luck.

Perhaps i have mis-read the thread - is there another way to actvite / de activate live view that doesnt use the OVF / LCD button ?

Guess you got it right, there should be no other way, but as for me, the only sure thing is first that I had the "black series" too, just once but had it, and second that, while LV is active, if you press preview or menu or whatever, *sometimes* it does not return to LV as expected after you leave that function or maybe it's you're just allowed to jump to something else. Camera seems left in a sort of a hanging state, which must be reset by cycling again the LV function.

I'm stumped by this, point is that when it happens is not easy to remember the sequence that led to it. In any case for me it's related to LV, something I do not use very often anyway.

Sorry, cannot offer an explanation for the black series, but it's the only thing I fear as you don't notice it unless you chimp, which I do maybe at the beginning of my shooting to check the histogram and then forget about it.

Real glad you liked my site. Thanks.

I recently shot a series of four or five "black bear in a cave photos" with my L1, but have no idea what caused it as it corrected itself after I recycled the power. I don't remember if I was using LiveView at the time or not and (fingers crossed!) it hasn't happened since...
