J. de Ridder Posted December 21, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have just purchased my M8.2 and have shot some incredible shot since then. I would like to put them on-line in a web-site sort of environment, my own web-site as opposed to flickr or whatever have you. I have no idea at all as how to begin doing this, and I mean from the beginning onward like getting an internet address, setting up the collection etc. Is there a complete package which enables one to easily do this? Advertisement Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Hi J. de Ridder, Take a look here Image Web-Site. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted December 21, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 21, 2008 Which OS do you use? The easiest way I know is via Apple's "me.com" service, but I think that's only for Mac users. I expect that Microsoft will offer something like it too. There are three things that you need to create your own website 1. A web address 2. Someone to store all your files on line (a "host") 3. Some software to create the website from your files 4. A means of getting the website from your computer to your "host". This is done by means of a "ftp" program. OK, that's 4 things Buying your own web address is easy. There are hundreds of companies that will sell you an address, and most of them will also host your files as well. Shop around for both of these services, as prices vary. As an example, I use Binasys to host my site, and they also sold me my andybarton.com address. They have a small search window there so that you check whether "mysite.com" is still available. As far as creation software is concerned, again, there are hundreds of programs out there that will do this, including Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture and others. I use software called Galerie to create my pages. It's free and fabulous. But, only for a Mac There will be loads of similar offerings from other companies if you use a PC. You could also start from scratch with a proper web creation program, such as Dreamweaver, but that really is overkill these days. This software creates a complete website on your own computer. You then need to send it to your host, via the ftp software. I use Transmit 3 from Panic software. Cheap and very easy to use. You could also go down the rout of one of the more sophisticated bespoke photograph costs, such as Clikpic, who will provide the hosting and the software, but with less control than doing it on your own. Andy, I have Mac's ... have been looking into the iWeb feature... looks perfectly capable of doing the things I would like to achieve. Thanks for the help.... cwf Posted December 21, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 21, 2008 Please allow me also to encourage you to try iWeb on a me.com. There isn't much of a learning curve for iWeb, setting up pages is straight forward, and Apple seems to have nailed hiding the mechanics of publishing a website. All the user does is click the Publish button. I started out thinking I'd move up, but that hasn't happened, so far.
