Roger Pellegrini Posted December 20, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My MP meter doesn't work under -3 degrees C (26+/- degrees F). The indicator light and the arrows in the viewfinder just disappear. Once I bring it inside and it warms up, it works again. Is this normal? Roger Pellegrini Posted December 20, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted December 20, 2008 Hi Roger,Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you need a new battery ?! Does the battery-shaped LED light up? Regards Ruben No. I put a new battery in about three weeks ago. The battery icon does not come on once it is warm. Is it necessary to turn it off everytime by putting it to "B/off" when not using it? rubenkok Posted December 20, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 20, 2008 "When batteries are fresh, they are also good for operation at temperatures down to -20 C (-4F)" writes Gunter Osterloh in the Leica M Advanced photo school book. So there should be no problem. Is it necessary to turn it off everytime by putting it to "B/off" when not using it? No: After releasing the shutter and shutter movement, the exposure meter is turned off and the LED(s) in the viewfinder go out. But: When transporting the camera, e.g. in a bag, and if the camera will not be used for a long time, it should be turned off, i.e. set to B/OFF. Hope this is some help regards Ruben
Roger Pellegrini Posted December 20, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted December 20, 2008 Okay. Thanks. I guess the meter is not made to work in below freezin temperatures then.
Shootist Posted December 20, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 20, 2008 Okay. Thanks. I guess the meter is not made to work in below freezin temperatures then. Please try a new battery and post back with what happens.. Could also be the battery contacts in the camera. When it get cold the battery and contacts shrink and it could be losing contact with the battery.
Photon42 Posted December 21, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Roger, what usually happens in your case with new batteries and the MP is, that the release was accidentally touched over a prolonged period. That's why I switch it to B, or don't even advance the film, when it goes back into the bag. Try that with known good (new) batteries. The meter will definitely work below zero degrees Celsius, no problem. The issue is actually identical to the M6. If you closely inspect the shutter speed dial of the M6 and the MP, you'll notice the MP now has the "B" position marked "B/Off". Guess why. Martin T-M Posted December 21, 2008 Share #8 Posted December 21, 2008 Roger, try lithium batteries (DL 1/3n) . They are more reliable during low temperatures
