Flash Sync?

Hi all,

I've been doing some photo's for a project I'm working on with the MP and M7 with strong flashlight.

I used 3 Metz mz 54i flashes, triggered by Pocket Wizzard. I needed a lot of DOF and a harsh, contrasty look.

There was a lot of light, I measured f11 @ 1/50 100 ISO film.

Over the past weeks I shot a few rolls like this, and the last 2 from both cameras have these dark stripes on the right side of the frame. Only on the edge, the rest of the negative looks just fine.

I'm not too worried about this, just curious if any of you has seen this before and knows what it is.

Is it the flash sync? Or something else? I have a feeling this has to do with the shutter opening/closing.

BTW, the shots from the MP are much worse/darker than the ones from the M7. (slow cloth versus fast metal?)

Sorry I can't show the complete negatives, it's a privacy matter concerning the people in the frame who are taken care of by a nurse.

Thanks, Peter

There are a number of things that might cause this . first is the shutter speed of camera with the shutter closing too early ,the easiest way to teat this is to shoot a few frames at a 30th if the the lines are still there check your lens hood is not cutting off , or you have fall off with the flash head (though looking at the files that does not appear likely) , if you have still have this band it might be that there is a slight delay in your shutter opening ,eg the flash has fired slightly early and by the time the shutter has reached the last area of the frame it has peaked ,so it might be worth testing with another flash to see if the problem is with the camera or the Metz .

Hi,

The MP and M7 both have slow cloth shutters, the difference is that the M7 shutter is electronically timed and with suitable SCA gear can do high-speed or second-curtain synch (but you don't seem to have been using those).

Either way, if the problem started at the same time with two different cameras it seems very unlikely to be a camera problem ... and if it is a camera problem it should be easy to reproduce.

It sounds as if the problem occured just on the last two rolls of film. Can you link it to a particular lighting setup (e.g. one series of shots, shots taken in a particular room)?

By the way, when you say "the right side of the frame", do you mean the right-hand side of the image when you look at the print or transparency, or the right hand side of the camera frame (the side where the sprocket and take-up spool are)? I can't tell from the fragments you posted.
