Advertisement Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Hi rpfoto, Take a look here 28mm zeiss. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thompsonkirk Posted December 19, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 19, 2008 I suggest you take a look at http://www.reidreviews.com for a comprehensive comparison. It's a subscription site ($35), but well worth it when you're interested in buying Leica (i.e., expensive) equipment. Kirk
gwelland Posted December 20, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 20, 2008 I used to use the 28 Biogon with my R-D1 and initially with the M8 before I got my Summicrons. In general I'd say that the image quality of the Zeiss is pretty competitive with the Leica in so far as it's a very sharp lens with high micro-contrast. It is an excellent lens with little distortion or vignetting that I saw. The UV/UR coding obviously needs to be manual and it seems to work well coded as an Elmarit. The biggest difference I found was the size and focus control between the lenses. The Zeiss with the hood was longer and I found the focus control easier with the tabbed Leica control. The construction of the Zeiss is very solid and the focus and aperture rings (1/3 vs 1/2 stops) were very smooth and nicely damped - every bit the competitor to the Leica. I ended up selling my Zeiss lens along with my second R-D1 but only really because I wanted the unity of a full Leica setup with my M8. It wasn't due to any issues with the IQ from the Zeiss. Printmaker Posted December 20, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 20, 2008 I've been looking into this lens as well. At about $900, it is $600 less than the Leica 28 Elmarit (after rebate) but you'll need to have it coded for about $75 plus shipping at DAG. So, after shipping its around a $500 savings. Both lenses have about the same contrast and resolution but the Zeiss is larger - about the size of the Summicron. I have a Zeiss 21 Biogon and like the results. Its sharp and well made but it is not as finely crafted as a Leica lens. You will have to decide for yourself if that little extra bit of old world craftsmanship is worth $500. The Summicron is a sweet lens. I had the opportunity to shoot with one and loved it. I just can't justify the $3,300 or so right now. Still, if business was better, it would be on my christmas list. The CV 28/3.5 is a nice little lens and a good choice. I wish I could find someone who had a black one and wanted to trade it for my 35/2.5 CV M. The reviews on the CV 28/2 are mixed. Some love this lens. Others report focus shifts and harsh bokeh. Its bigger than the other 3 but reasonably priced. Could be an option though.
