Question re: D-LUX 4, barrel distortion, Aperture

Hi,

CaptureOne, provided with the camera, removes the barrel distortion from the raw images of the D-Lux 4. Does anyone know if the same is true for aperture? I ask because I had lunch today with a well-known Leica dealer, and he was unaware of this distortion. He remarked that he has used the camera himself, and also uses Aperture. So I wonder if Aperture now also has the profile for the D-Lux 4?

Thanks,

Rich.

Richard--

Since to my knowledge Apple has not offered any system updates in the past week or so, I think the answer is still no.

You still have the option of using the free Adobe DNG converter which leaves very little distortion in the files, though more than the Capture One TIFFs.

Could it be that your dealer shoots JPG?

From what you say, he may have misunderstood or may not do a lot of post-processing.

Howard,

He MAY have misunderstood me, or perhaps he just brushed my remark aside. The former is much more likely. BTW, like you, I've also noticed that Adobe's DNG converter doesn't quite remove all the distortion. Maybe you could also answer this for me- why is it that when I use DNG converter, my .RWL files jump from 10 megs to 30? As always, Howard, thanks for helping this newbie.......:-)

For LX-3/D-Lux 4 files, the current version of the DNG converter demosaics the raw file, and stores the demosaiced data, which considerably increases file size. This is because there is (currently) no way to store lens correction data in the DNG, so the only way to generate a corrected file is to store it in what is effectively the form of a TIFF.
