High Quality Printing at home

For that size of prints you are looking at a large printer thta's not that cheap.

If the HP Z series, Z2100 & Z3100, is like the HP Photosmart B9180 it is a miser on inks and give excellent prints.

Your best bet is to do a google search and read the reviews.

Ronald, this guy

does comparisons of printers and makes a lot of sense.

Part of your decision, of course, will be to decide if you want to print 11" or 13" or 17" and that's just money speaking.

Check out some threads here on calibration. If you have not yet calibrated your monitor it's a requirement.

G'luck. And welcome to the forum.

BTW, speaking from experience, I highly recommend buying the printer you choose, refurbished, from the manufacturer.

I happen to use Epson printers and have now bot 4 refurb'd printers from them. They come with a short warranty and Epson ships them for free. If a rebate program is in progress, it applies to the refurb's as well.

I also buy my disk drives refurb'd.

I have been using an HP z3100 (24") printer, and Qimage as a driver on windows with great satisfaction and success.

I chose the HP because I do not print every day (or week), and it does not clog it's jets. Clogging was a big problem with epson's, and I gave mine away when I was using more ink to clear jets, than to print. If I printed every day, epson would probably be my choice.

It is critically important to both calibrate your monitor, and have or create good profiles for the papers you use. The HP z3100 has a built in spectrometer and will generate profiles for you.

If you are not familiar with profiles and a 'color managed workflow' than you should become familiar, otherwise all the above is a waste of time.

Regards ... Harold

The Canon ipf5100 is a 17" printer and is currently selling for $1329. It comes with 90ml ink carts as starters, but I calculate the ink alone is worth about $500-$600. There currently is a $200 rebate if you can supply them with the serial number of a "trade in" printer. (There is a list of acceptable printers.)

ATLEX.COM Part Number 2157B002

About two weeks ago, Atlex had a deal where the price was $999 and they gave you $300 worth of paper plus a free 100 sheet box of letter size paper. There also was the $200 serial number discount. So I got mine for $799 delivered. Additionally, they were out of one of the types of paper I ordered worth $55 and instead substituted paper that was worth $153. (List price.) So I got about $400 (list price) worth of paper. I already had a Canon ipf 6100 and bought this printer just for the inks, paper, and spare print heads. (For some unexplainable reason, the two print heads sell for about $1100 ($550 each) when purchased on their own.)

You may want to keep your eyes open for deals on this printer.

The Canon wiki will give you the info you need.
