NZDavid Posted December 13, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2008 David Pogue is well worth reading, inciteful but entertaining. All the digital cameras listed under $250 are good performers. Yes indeed, digital has progressed a heck of a way since 2001. The Panasonic's Leica lenses are a plus, but of course a lot depends on sensor and in-camera processing. Still, these cameras have funny "modes". Distortion mode? Why? Face detection? Maybe, but a rangefinder is more accurate. And vibration reduction works, but having an optical viewfinder so you can brace the camera against you forehead works better. As for high ISO speeds, I like Pogue's comment that results are absolutely horrible at those speeds and wouldn't even qualify as a Seurat painting. These cameras just cram in more and more technology to sound impressive, regardless of whether it's actually any practical use. Me, I'd still like to see a manual version digital Leica CL.
