Does anyone know why the goggles on the M Summaron 3.5 are removable? With them attached it brings up the correct 50mm frame lines and 35mm field on every M body I've tried which is the M2, M3, M6 and M8. Ser# 1595xxx. I'm just curious. I picked up the lens today. It's mint and has the original box and fitted insert, original warranty card and import card.

Len,

The only reason was to make the lens easier to store when not in use.

As you probably found out, the lens will not focus when the ‘goggles’ are removed - they not only alter the field of view but also change the linearity of the focusing. Even if you could turn the focusing mount without the goggles (there is a way to do this), rangefinder focusing would not be accurate.

Best,

I think it was because it was easier to manufacture that way. There existed a delightful case for the goggled Summarons (and the Summicron) which looked like half a hat box and could be carried by a strap over the shoulder. If you was carrying Leica gear, why not flaunt it?
