Why barrel distortion only in RAW?

I'm new to all this, but learning quickly, thanks to some of you. Now the question; why is it that only the .RWL images from my new D-Lux4 (oh, how I dislike that name) show barrel distortion. JPEGs are fine, no matter what imaging program I use. Has me scratching my head.............

Because the in-camera jpg processing corrects for the distortion

Exactly, as will raw processors that have the distortion correction built in to the profiles, such as Capture One or Adobe Camera Raw.

Richard: More to the point... all digital cameras fist shoot the image in RAW. Then, the cameras imaging engine converts it to a jpeg.

In essence, what this means, is a bit of software is doing "post processing" to the file very similar to what you might do when you finish your image in Photoshop or an editing program. So... the manufacturer will take that opportunity to "tweak" that image relative to their "taste" of what a finished image should look like. Again... just as you do when you edit an image.

If you choose to shoot in RAW, you (and your computer) are taking the position that the camera's imaging engine did when churning out a JPEG. This is why there are subtle differences between Leica's JPEGs and Pansonic's JPEGs. They're tailored to suit each companies philosophy of how a photo should look.

So.... in the D-Lux 4 and LX3, the imaging engine creating the JPEG, in addition to setting contrast, saturation and sharpness.... is also correcting barrel distortion.

Hope that's a little clearer for you.

"Hope that's a little clearer for you."

A very succinct explanation- thanks John. And if I had been thinking more clearly, I should/could have reasoned it out myself. Somewhere in the back of my head was the understanding that it's the camera that decides how to initially edit the jpeg. Problem is........ I've got too much rattlin' around in there now. <snicker>

Thanks, too, to Jeff and ibogost.

Rich.
