Guest rubidium Posted July 1, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm excited to report that I took delivery of this lens yesterday, and I just wanted to thank everyone on the forum who previously shared their valuable insights (and photos) with me regarding the lens. As a 50-year-old physicist, I've been around high technology for a long time, and it takes a lot to impress me. But upon my first look through the R9 viewfinder with this lens mounted, I must admit to being "stunned" by the bright, contrasty, and easy to focus image before me. My first shot with it, entitled "Hibiscus Stamen" appears in the 'Nature & Wildlife" section of the photo forum. Although I didn't intend to set out exploring the near-focusing range of this lens just yet, I guess I don't have any regrets that I did. Looking forward to capturing many more discoveries ... graeme_clarke Posted July 1, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2006 Rubidium - I've just bought a second hand one - it should be with me next week. Several forum members have commentedin the past on its super quality . I'd like to hear more views on its use especially, and the pictures that it pruduces, particularly from a DMR. Best wishes, Graeme
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 2, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 2, 2006 Honestly as a many lens owner of the R lenses, the 280 F4 is amazing lens in the sharpest dept probably right there with the 100 apo macro maybe better. That is a scary thought and with the 1.4 just as good. if you find one for a good price just buy it. On the DMR it just sings
pascal_meheut Posted July 2, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 2, 2006 Here is an example I like with the DMR and the 280 (and one on the only as I do not use this lens often now) 100 ISO, f/4, 1/500 and jpg file. I applied my standard sharpening in Photoshop and that's all. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1054&stc=1&d=1151817474 planche.jpg and the crop http://www.leica-camera-user.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1055&stc=1&d=1151817474 crop.jpg Welcome, dear visitor! telyt Posted July 2, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) http://www.wildlightphoto.com/birds/accipitridae/coha05.html The 280 f/4 is amazing. I just returned from Alaska where I used the 280 90% of the time. I even left the 400mm f/6.8 at home, using the 280 + 1.4x APO instead.
zanydave Posted July 2, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 2, 2006 Been offered a used 280/4 for 1600 GBP (approx 3000 USD) would you say this was a fair price? it is described as mint. Dave
Guest rubidium Posted July 2, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 2, 2006 Graeme: You are going to love this lens. Be prepared after Thursday to have greater difficulty taking your camera out of your hands. Dave: If the article is truly mint, then this is a very good price. Mint/like-new 280/4.0's in the US - when you can find them (which is tough) have been going for about 4000-4200 USD. Brand new is more like 6000 USD. Cheers, Jim

robert_parker Posted July 2, 2006 Share #16 Posted July 2, 2006 Guy - those are just stunning - I love the one of the monkey just shoving his face into the plane of focus. I'm a real fan of how the DMR handles backlighting, too - but in my case it's because it gets me out trouble whne I've shot too much against the light !! Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 2, 2006 Share #17 Posted July 2, 2006 That damn Monkey almost jumped at the lens because he could see himself in the front element , scared the life out of me. LOL Thanks , these images from the DMR bring back Kodachrome smiles
robert_parker Posted July 2, 2006 Share #18 Posted July 2, 2006 The Zebra shot is a real slammer in terms of difficulty - you've got texture in the stripes too.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 2, 2006 Share #19 Posted July 2, 2006 Robert I have been saying this for about a year now with the DMR is really folks your shooting a small MF digital back. It has all the same charactistics of the MF backs just in a more user friendly package and get to use the best glass made. The bottom line is it is all about image and frankly leica delivers better than anyone I have seen or used. I honestly just love this system and after 31 years being a Pro it is hard to love anything.
graeme_clarke Posted July 2, 2006 Share #20 Posted July 2, 2006 Dave - I paid just a little more than your offer from a dealer. Its about 50% of the new price (Current listing £3379). The only other one I've seen offered is from a dealer in Nuernberg, Germany and they want 3999 euro (about £2550) for a one that's 4 years old. So, with all the rave reviews of the lens, and Guy's superb shots, its a one to go for. best wishes, Graeme
