MP3 Posted October 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Dear It's been some 6-7 weeks since Leica's official M8 announcement and Photokina was passed. It really kills our patience withholding the release of photo samples from 'the new gem'. I have booked a preview today here in Hong Kong at the sole importer dealer's place. Having confirmed on the avaliability of M8 demo tester earlier, I snapped up my 28/2, 50/1.4, 75/2 and my 1GB SD this morning for the test drive only to find out on the way that the intended M8 demo is not available and nobody knows when it will come again. The dealer kindly addressed my disappointment and expressed that I can still drop by to test the other 3 new model (D3, VL and DL3 I supposed) but just who cares about these panny cams... ! Another forum discussion quote: "If the files the M8 produces were marvelous, we all would have already seen them. I am sure about that." Just don't want to see Leica repeating the DMR delay again. This simply pushs people back to R-D1, which IMO already reveals unique image qualities and ISO performance rivals the pro-dslr. Forgive me for this grievance and air... but anybody here know a solid time frame for the picture release? Sean, what is your latest info then? stunsworth Posted October 11, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2006 I guess we'll see images when the firmware is finalised, not before.
marknorton Posted October 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2006 If the information Guy and others have been given is correct, there may be up to 2000 M8s waiting to be shipped and 16 October is all-hands-on-deck in Solms to load them with the Golden Firmware, check them and get them ready for shipping. Even now, I expect they will be continuing to test the camera looking for anything they can find so that they know the extent of any downside. There's likely to be a list of minor things which are deferred to V1.1. After all the hullabaloo of Photokina, I just hope there's not something which is really going to spoil our days and delay the shipping of this thing. sean_reid Posted October 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2006 Reviewers have agreed not to publish or discuss pictures made with the M8 until we have been able to test production cameras with final firmware. I'm told that I should have a production camera to test sometime between now and October 19. I had expected it right after Photokina but it isn't here yet so I can't test it yet. Again, however, Leica's official delivery time frame for this camera is late November. That doesn't mean that they can't ship sooner but I'm going to defend Leica here and emphasize that they are not late with delivery right now. I understand that people are eager to see sample pictures and I'm eager to publish them. Cheers, Sean
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 11, 2006 What I was told is the will finish with firmware on Oct 16. and be ready load, test , box and ship . No date given and this was from a leica rep. From a dealer i was told ahead of schedule, this may not mean camera's shipping earlier than there projected Nov . dates just that they are on target and actually ahead in the game. All of this is good, and means they are not behind in any way and will ship when they seem fit. There is a lot to do for shipping too with containers either going air frieght or on a ship. This stuff takes some time . Out of all that what counts is there moving as planned, the hope is we will see them earlier but that is hard to say and every company has a plan that will allow for issues along the way in there time schedule
larry Posted October 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 11, 2006 Like everyone else I'm anxious to see what the M8 can do, but not at the expense of the camera being half-baked. The Earth will continue to spin even if the M8's introduction is a little delayed. Patience is a virtue that all M shooters should practice. Larry Patience, yes, moreover the introduction is not delayed and would not be until December 1st. Cheers, Sean
mitchell Posted October 11, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 11, 2006 I was told by a US dealer that he wouldn't get M8's until Dec., and he didn't know how many of the thirty he ordered he would get then. I'm amazed how worked up I and everyone else is about this. We can still take pictures in the meantime. It will no doubt be a wonderful camera, but not magic. But it feels like it will be: Magic. MP3 Posted October 11, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted October 11, 2006 Thank you so much for all you folks' kind opinions. It must be my great expectation on todays' preview event, like kids sleepless overnight anticipating their first picnic experience... visualising to check on the firmware version, taking shots with 50 asph at 1.4 1/8000s,... and sharing with you all... Patience is a virtue that all M shooters should practice. Larry Larry, I agree it is a good time to uphold and practise our M virtue. Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 11, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 11, 2006 Oh hell ,trust me I want the damn camera now. I have no patience at all but i do understand the whole process very well. This will be my 4th camera to be one of the first to have on release. DMR,1dsMKII,1dMKII and now the M8. Trailblazing sucks but it sure is fun in the long run:D :D
Bob Ross Posted October 11, 2006 Share #11 Posted October 11, 2006 I was told by a US dealer that he wouldn't get M8's until Dec., and he didn't know how many of the thirty he ordered he would get then. Best, Mitchell My dealer told me yesterday that there was a possibility that the first shipment would arrive in the US on Nov. 15th. After that they would go through Customs then to Leica USA and then to the dealers, processed and shipped out. So, the early Dec. estimate is probably right. Shippment numbers are apparently not locked down for the first shipment. Reviewers will probably get their finalized bodies ahead of the regular shipments.
