Learner Posted November 26, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I just visited the site of Leica Boutique in Montreal and, lo and behold, was met with the message that there is a $150 rebate from Leica after one buys the camera, presumably at full price. I assume the rebate is in Canadian dollars... translating to about $115 US... I haven't checked the math. Here's the website: http://leicaboutique.com/... ...d=518&osCsid=c5ba83c8ffcc66432f0a7da1477dc288 Does anybody have any other news about the rebate? Does anybody know what brought this on: guilt, low sales, complaints about RAW processing, ...? Shifting stock... could there be a D-Lux 5 around the corner? Could Adobe's release today of Camera Raw 5.2 mean that Leica no longer has to pay a stiff licence fee per camera for Capture One? Does anybody know if the rebate is international? I can't imagine it applying only to Canada? Does anybody know if it's retroactive for those who already own the D-Lux 4? Are there rebates for other Leica products? Advertisement Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Hi Learner, Take a look here D-Lux 4: $150 (Cdn) rebate from Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
brucek Posted November 26, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 26, 2008 David Farkas of Daln Photo posted the same information, and apparently the numbers are the same in US $. I'm surprised there hasn't been more kibbutzing about this...
alexc Posted November 26, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 26, 2008 Jean from leicaboutique is a very knowledgeable person. Just ask him about the details.
John Collins Posted November 26, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 26, 2008 All of Gods children love deals. On the other hand, does this mean that a replacement is in the works? Or are sales falling off a bit?
Learner Posted November 26, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted November 26, 2008 My guess would be low sales against the LX3, but I have no idea what the real story is. Wouldn't Leica make enough D-Lux 4s to carry it through Photokina 2010?
photogdave Posted November 26, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 26, 2008 Leica rebates are always in U.S. dollars. If you buy the camera in Canada in CDN dollars you will still get your $150 US rebate cheque from Leica. I imagine they are doing this because of the LX3. At the current exchange rate a DLux 4 is over $1065 in Canada. The LX3 is $525. Who in their right mind would pay DOUBLE for the SAME camera?
John Thawley Posted November 26, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not to be a cynic... but perhaps the original price was artificially inflated with the future rebate in mind. Think about it, you're going to get an initial sales bounce from early starters... those that want to be the first kid on the block. Next, here come the holidays... let's throw out a rebate. And the beat goes on. To be honest, I was going to hold off. I use my Digilux 2 far more than my D-Lux 3. But, hey... when you sweeten the deal by $150... I'm thinking I might have to have one. LOL JT
ianho_ Posted November 26, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 26, 2008 They really need to make the rebates International. I'm really upset about this. $150 is a LOT of money.
cfc247 Posted November 26, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 26, 2008 I just spoke w/ a rep from Leica (NJ) and he confirmed that the rebate went out to all "dealers." I don't know if that includes international markets. But it should be up and available on the websites of the major dealers real soon. I bought mine on Nov. 7 so trying to see if can still get in on the rebate. Otherwise, I will just return my to J&R, since it is within their return period of 30 days. I will post any news on how far back the rebate goes for those of you who like me purchased the dlux4 prior to this news.

LOL John--I just bought last week and am hoping to convince Leica that my early enthusiasm doesn't disentitle me from the rebate. I don't have the D-Lux 3 and don't use the Digilux 2 that often, but IMHO the D-Lux 4 blows the socks off the D-Lux 2. I say go for it.

cfc247 Posted November 26, 2008 Share #12 Posted November 26, 2008 I just spoke with someone from Leica NJ, I think the receptionist there. Though everyone seems to wear several hats there. According to her, the rebate will cover any Dlux 4 purchased in later Oct. or Nov. She didn't seem too clear on that. Since the first time I asked she said "all are covered." She just told me that I am fine with my Nov. 7 purchase from J&R. Not really sure how far back the rebate really goes. I think for that one would have to speak to someone in management. So for those of you who have purchased it within the last month, you should be eligible.

I'm praying that Leica HQ directs all international dealers to do the rebate too.

brucek Posted November 27, 2008 Share #16 Posted November 27, 2008 oh man, I just send out my registration card to them, anyone know what else to do? You could give Leica NJ a call to see what they will have you do, or you could fill out the registration form, make a copy of your sales receipt and write a short note explaining that you just sent in your registration card and send it off to them. From what I can gather Leica sounds like they're going to be pretty flexible on this. Bruce
