stevme Posted October 13, 2006 Share #41 Posted October 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I purchased an LX1 last year after reading Michael Reichman's review in Luminous Landscape. I have been extremely pleased with this little camera. What most impressed me was the quality of the images. It does have a problem at higher ISOs. However, I found that I could often achieve stunning, fully saturated color interiors by balancing the camera on some support or other and using its very handy self-timer (choice of 2 or 10 second wait). The lens was a revelation to me, and here I am on a Leica forum. The camera is also extremely user friendly. It has a battery charger about the size and weight of a deck of cards with no chord on it; so you plug it directly into the wall. It shoots RAW files, as has been mentioned, and you have the flexibiity to shoot completely manually if you please. It's too bad the high ISO problem isn't fixed yet, but I find the camera an ideal traveling companion, with many user friendly features. It's a dandy. Advertisement Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Hi stevme, Take a look here A DP review Leica should read seriously.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
albertwang Posted October 13, 2006 Share #42 Posted October 13, 2006 Surprisingly the Panny point and shoots are the faster shooting muthers on the market... no lag time. Great for street photog with a little cam. The drawback of most p and s cams is the lag time not the noise level for me. Better to get the rite shot than the fancy wrong shot. Dan States Posted October 13, 2006 Share #43 Posted October 13, 2006 This thread shows how brand loyalty surpasses logic. I have owned just about every kind of Leica camera made. I love them and use them all the time. That said, the cameras that Panasonic has been branding Leica are not Leica's in any way behond the label. I own the D-lux2 and find it to be pretty sad at all but the 80 asa setting. It compares poorly to even my DSC200 Sony....at more than twice the price. I do like the full motion video function, so I use it primarily as a pocket camcorder. For the life of me I can't imagine why the 16:9 ration sensor is a "feature". I hate having to crop my prints to take advantage of the entire page, and I don't plan on using my TV as a junior slide projector. Panasonic makes great TV's, rice cookers and all manner of other consumer products, but they are not the top of the game in digital photography. I'm glad these connections feed some cash into Leica, but I for one will not go down that road again. On a seperate note, it seems that the value of posts in this forum seem to be the inverse of their frequency. It's quite the little social experiment to see how this thing has morphed from the old forum.

It gives me more creative latitude. Again, cropping isn't the same. Previsualization. No brand loyalty here. There is only one brand I dislike consistently. I like lots of the others. Guest stnami Posted October 13, 2006 Share #46 Posted October 13, 2006 ... well some things stay the same I still reckon it is a 'pocketful of noise'. as a P$&S jpeg thingie There are very few successful 16:9 images that I have seen on this forum, there is a difference between liking the format and being able to use it.......... Anyway I can use my D2 on 400 iso if I want a shopping-bag full of noise but never venture that far....... but for those loyal disciples onward we go barefoot, at arm's length, asking ourselves what's that bulge in our pockets..... those that use and enjoy please feel free to continue with your activities......... (quote) ***** a lot more people participating, perhaps, because they can afford a 'leica' no matter who makes it. in other words, the entry level price has gone way down. also, manual focusing is not for everyone. wearing glasses, i've tested myself against various cameras and auto-focusing always wins out. isn't this something new for leica? and i expect people will move up to the higher-priced leicas. you can do an awful lot with the d-lux 2 if you desire, but it has to fit your style of photography. frankly, it's rarely the camera and it's always the photographer. look at people like majoli and kratochvil who use the simplest equipment. they go where angels fear to tread, much less us, absolutely intrepid. as for posting, some prefer to participate and maybe learn something and maybe pass along a bit of useful information. alas, the old guard always passes! kobold Posted October 14, 2006 Share #48 Posted October 14, 2006 Imants; I agree---it is a pocketful of noise, but I think that when I can shoot Raw and batch process that really won't be a problem. Most of the things I will use it for will end up on the web. I have other gear for real work. And when bigger sensor version comes out (or maybe that Fuji or is it Sigma Foveon-equipped fixed 28mm lens thing) I'll probably get that, if it's better. In the meantime, fun times and another way to see.
