roguewave Posted November 20, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My wife gave up printing her shots with her HP 7960 Photosmart printer. It did a fine job printing 5x7 & 8x10 glossy color prints from her Leica DMC. This was strictly her show & I made it a point to leave things as she placed them. She's done with that now. Does anyone know anything about the capabilities of this printer, particularly with B&W. I have been going to a lab to get proofs & fine prints, but thought maybe I could see if this device can produce anything close to excellence in B&W. I'm going to study up, but if anyone's familiar with this kit, I'd be grateful for the lowdown. Thanks, Ben
Advertisement Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Hi roguewave, Take a look here HP 7960 Photosmart printer. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LDM Posted November 26, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 26, 2008 Ben, Does great B&W prints. Make sure you have the 59 photo gray cartridge installed. Gives superb gradation and tonality on the HP premium and premium plus papers. Larry
RobMac Posted December 5, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2008 Small combo ink carts are a PITA, but for a budget printer, it does a nice job on B&Ws (converted in PS) on premium plus gloss paper. Search around, some, albeit not many, aftermarket paper makers offer some profiles for the 7960.
robert_parker Posted December 5, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2008 Hi Ben I've used a HP 7960 for some time now for A4 printing, together with an Epson R800. The HP printer seems to produce good results straight out of the box, with minimal calibration, particularly if you stick to HP's own Premium Plus paper, I mainly use the glossy version. IMHO both the photo cartridges are essential and in essence give 9 ink printing, though the machine uses ink quite fast in full colour printing and three inks per cartridge can be a pain, as LDM says, if only one has run out. I'm not sure this machine is particularly sensitive to profiling,it being quite hard to lure it away from the out of the box results, though these are pretty mucvh ok. roguewave Posted December 11, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted December 11, 2008 Thanks guys. I used this to make a small group of 5x7's that are bound together so I can hand a potential subject a sample of my work & erase any discomfort with my style & skills. It has worked wonders already. Bruce Davidson suggested this and I can testify to it's efficacy. Both the B&W & color images printed very nicely at this size. I have also printed some 8 x 10's as a gift to some of folks that allowed me to make some fine images of them. It's worked well so far, but I think I'll need something different to make more larger, gallery quality B&W prints on rag-based papers. Any suggestions?
