A.Brunner Posted October 9, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need a fairly accurate idea of the front to back dimension of the removable base plate of the new M8. I know it is more than the M7, which is very close to 32mm from front to back. Could any of you have any way to find out what the M8 is? I have no idea who has access to one so they could measure it, but I imagine one of you does. Thanks!
Advertisement Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Hi A.Brunner, Take a look here M8 Base Plate Dimension. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 9, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2006 The specification on the web-site says 37mm but I have no idea how accurate that is.
adan Posted October 9, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2006 Arggh! Wish you'd asked a week ago - I could have measured a real one! The baseplate is not as deep as the overall dimensions of the M8, since it doesn't include the slight extensions for the LCD/viewfinder/thumbwheel on the back, or the lens mount in front. So it's on the order of 34-35mm externally (whereas my M4-2 is 31mm). Metal thickness means the internal dimension is about 1.5mm less than that. A.Brunner Posted October 10, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted October 10, 2006 Thanks for the help so far! From the photos I have attempted to scale the 34-35mm does seem close. Hopefully this still will reach someone who has an M8 available and a way to get an actual measurement.
Guest Arias Posted October 13, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 13, 2006 No exact measurement - but take a look at the following M8-preview: Leica M8 Hands-on Preview: 3. Body & Design: Digital Photography Review Scrolling down the site you'll find a very interesting side-by-side-comparison of M7 and M8. Moving the cursor over the image will bring it to flip between the two models. Comparing the base plates you'll see very clearly that the M8-base-plate is deeper (and of course the top plate as well). As I'm told there is a 3mm-difference.
