Guest rontr6 Posted November 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Everybody Is there a specific year or range of serial numbers for the Digilux 2/ DMC-LC1 which are more likely to have dodgy sensors or if I am buying one would I be better avoiding one that still has the original sensor. rjans Posted November 15, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 15, 2008 Make a call to Leica Solms customer service. You need the serial number. They can tell you on the phone if the sensor has been replaced. Best
rjans Posted November 15, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 15, 2008 Forgot to mention this only applies for the Leica Digilux 2. Don't know about the Pana version. Best
mark_a_h Posted November 15, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 15, 2008 There was a post made here in 2007 that attempted to answer this question. People posted the serial numbers of their faulty D2's. I don't think there is a publicly known range of Leica numbers to watch out for, only that the faulty sensors were in cameras made in 2004. Panasonic did provide a range though (from A4SYxxxxx to G4SYxxxxx). This one: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/39529-digilux-2-serial-numbers-sensor-failure.html And more info here: Widespread CCD problems in consumer imaging products

laptoprob Posted November 16, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Initial conclusion of my old thread was that cameras starting with '3' were less likely to develop the sensor problem. Pretty quickly this conclusion turned out to be faulty. Leica still replaces them, afaik. Sadly, there is no info on production serial numbers. So there is almost no way to link age to serial number. Guest rontr6 Posted November 16, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 16, 2008 Thanks for the replies, looks like the best bet then is only to buy one that has had the sensor replaced. Ron

Although they don't have any for sale listed right now, but Popflash (PopFlash.Photo) has been a good source for factory-refurbished D2s. Not only has their price been fairly attractive (I paid $677 for the one I bought from them earlier this year), but they have had their sensors replaced and in my case at least, the cosmetic condition of the camera was such that it was indistinguishable from new. I got one from Popflash too. Functionally perfect.... cosmetically 9.5 - same price. Nice. JT
pleeson Posted November 16, 2008 Share #12 Posted November 16, 2008 I also purchased a refurbished one from PopFlash with the same price. This also carries a Leica warranty for 1 year. I'd only buy one that had sensor replaced or plan to do it when offering to buy.
Guest rontr6 Posted November 25, 2008 Share #13 Posted November 25, 2008 Took delivery of a new toy today, Digilux 2 with new sensor, I phoned Leica UK and they confirmed via Solms. It's a nice piece of kit, feels well built compared to a lot of modern cameras but not as solid as my old Ms. Ron:D
