There's been a lot about Capture 1 of late. The most recent version has caused stability issues with the Mac which in my opinion have not been completely resolved with 4.5.2. Over the past 10 months since I purchased my M8 I worked mostly with Capture 1 thinking the two were designed together and would work best together. I also worked it with my E1.

 

With the trouble of the latest version and a few days off to play, I processed identical images in Capture 4.5.2 and CS3. Not only did I like the additional control better in CS3 but I felt the tiffs generated were better in a side by side on screen comparison. So, with all the other factors/features/workflow and image quality considered, I'm going with CS3 and forgetting about Phase One. There is talk of Lightroom and I do like what I've seen of it online but for now, I'm keeping things simple and getting back to the image itself.

 

Any other opinions are welcome, I'm an old TriX Rodinal guy who now uses XTol for convenience as I incorporate digital into my process. My digital darkroom is a Mac Pro with dual 2.8's and 10 gigs of RAM and an NEC 2690 calibrated with SpectraView for those interested in this workflow.

CS4 and the Adobe camera Raw that comes with it have even more controls, the most useful being the local adjustment brush.

Until the advent of the Adobe DNG profile Editor with which you can fine tune the camera profiles, I used Capture One because I found the rendering of caucasian skin in Adobe Camera Raw with the standard profiles much too magenta. Now I have been able to make very satisfactory profiles and only use Capture One to check a difficult picture.

The profiles also work in Lightroom which I find excellent, especially the print module.

The biggest advantage that Photoshop offers is the possibility of softproofing before I print. Although this is far from perfect...

As someone else already stated PS CS4 ACR 5.x has even more controls then ACR 4.x that is included with CS3.

I've always used PS ACR and only rarely tried C1. Never liked the workflow and found it hard to understand. I'm not in a darkroom, I'm at a computer. That and I find it slow and the newest version drops folders & files all over my hard drive, IE no central cache and no way to make one.

 

I'll stick to ACR for RAW developement and PS for other edits and printing. Works for me.

Hi I am a newcomer to this forum, although I have owned a Digilux 2 for 3+ years.

I bought Adobe CS a few years ago, and found it to be a very comprehensive piece of software albeit only a small portion of its power is for photographers.

 

I have just today bought a D-Lux 4. and have loaded up Phase One software which came withe the bundle, as yet I cannot understand it at all, so see me having a steep learning curve.

I hope you good photographers keep this forum going, as I hope to get to grips with Phase one

I too, started off with Capture 1 version 3.XX and initially satisfied. I did some minor editiny in PS3 and printed. When Capture 1 version 4.1 came out, I had some menu problems and was totally last about how to use it. I then settled for CS3 and Bridge > it works. By the way, I use an Leica M8 and shoot mainly raw (dng). Good to here that I am not the only one who had problem with Capture 1.

I find C1 better for my purposes.

 

It takes time to get accustomed to it and the last version had some challenges.

 

But all in all, I prefer C1. The support of multiple screens in the last version is really neat.

Just to put it on the edge...

I think that C1 produces "dead" images L2. ACR produces "screaming" images.

C1's colors are more correct in expense of image quality IMO.

ACR has a more vivid quality at the expense of colors being sometimes out of control IMO.

 

I don't care about workflow at the moment.

Ammitsboel, I don't know what is different, but my C1 Ver4 images sing! So much so that I have no interest in trying anything else. When I add the voices of my clients I am conducting a veritable choir!!

 

Like a high performance car, RAW processors do need to be deiven skillfully. Work at it is my only technique.

That certainly is true. I have been using C1 for many years but the newest Pro version crashes multiple times daily on my Mac Pro running Leopard. I'm really disappointed with the instability though I like the program itself very much.

To clarify my comment above, and to further support Sean's comment, I reverted from Ver 4.5 back to 4.1 because of the crashing of 4.5.I find 4.1 to be an excellent performer but will wait for proper fixes to 4.5 before upgrading again.
