Can someone tell me if the manual is wrong or what i have to do. Thanks

Do you mean adjust the exposure to compensate for a backlit subject? If Yes then you need to press the up arrow button to bring up the exposure compensation adjust. But what mode are you shooting in? The adjustment doesn't come up if you're in Manual mode.

A newbie reading the manual? How novel! And how refreshing! :D

Yes, the backlight compensation referred to is indeed to compensate for a backlit subject. Pressing that up arrow button should bring up the EV adjustment bar.

It seems that you have found a firmware bug. In fact, initially in "IA" mode, pressing the up button gives you a simple backlight option. But later on, by some mysterious circumstances, it changes to the general EV compensation function as found in the other modes.

 Werner
