PERFECT case and grip solution for the D-LUX 4!!!

I posted this over at dpreview...but thought I'd do the same here....

I know there are a few threads about cases for the D-LUX 4...but it looks like Luigi has the IDEAL solution!

I almost pulled the trigger on the handgrip as I think that it's an essential addition to the camera...but now it appears that Luigi is making a couple of case versions for our cameras...one for those who do not have a grip...and now another with a built in grip!

To me...this is the perfect answer. Yes, Luigi's cases are expensive...but with his built in grip, it saves you the money for the Leica bolt on. So if you back out this cost...the Luigi case becomes a bargain! It looks like the case with built in grip will be $160 Euros (about $200)...but the handgrip will cost you $85 at the cheapest...so you are talking about $115 for the Luigi! Not to mention the ability to customize color choices and such!

My only complaint...and I have an email in to see if he can do something about it...is the neck strap. It appears to be permanently attached to the case...which is something I would not like. I prefer a wrist strap for such a small camera most of the time...and would either like to get the case minus the neck strap, or see if Luigi can make it removable. We'll see what he says.

Anyway...here is a pic from Luigi's site....

Cheers!

The other thing I'd be concerned about is that Luigi states that he doesn't have a D-Lux 4 (yet) to model a case on. Given that the LX3 has a built in grip, I'd be afraid the case for an LX3 would be a bit loose on a D-Lux 4. The D-Lux 4 is slimmer on the one side by several mm.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that....he did mention that his D-LUX 4 was due in any day and I would highly doubt that he would put out a case without making sure the fit was just right.

Either way...the case is not ready just yet, and I will wait until Luigi assures that the fit is spot on for the D-LUX 4.

Cheers,

I was also looking that Luigi's as an option until I read this post by David Farkas on his blog:

Nice work with your observations. Does the new D Lux 4 have a threaded lens to accept filters, etc. and will Leica have a hood, and other accessories in the future for this camera, besides the flash?

Thanks,

Gary

to gary,

i asked the same question at the leica booth. leica told me that they are considering additional converters . no threaded lens but a ring which you can take off (as with the pana lx-3)

as i have ordered a d-lux 4 with all accessories, my main complaint is the missing ever-ready case when the grip is attached. good news as this seems also in the works !

According to David it seems like Leica is planning to introduce a case that will work with the grip. I have a feeling it will be similar to the current Lumix case for the LX3 which is another option I am currently considering.

Luigi is always happy to do custom variants, so I can't imagine it would be a problem. He usually charges a small additional fee, but no big deal.

Well I ordered up my Luigi! I have a few requests to him...and I am sure that he will make it happen. I went for the recessed tripod screw as well. I think it's a great feature for a few reasons...tripod use of course, as well as added security to ensure the case and camera fit tight. :-)

I am also requesting a finish unlike anything I've seen on his site...but I think it will look great!

Will keep you all posted!

  • 2 weeks later...

Ride,

I purchased the Leica case, but was unhappy with the size, so I think I will order a Luigi case.

May I ask exactly what you orderted? Did you get the back flap attached or removeable?

If you did receive it, how did it work out?
