D-Lux 3

I was thinking of ordering a black d-lux 3 online but before doing so I went to check on it's panasonic counterpart which I could borrow from my photo supplier for half a day. Figuring the difference between the panasonic and the Leica would be minimal and after all 599€ is quite an amount of money to spend blindly.

anyway cutting a long story short, I cannot imagine Leica attaching her name to an optical product like this, the results, however configured are to say the least not very good. Huge grain, fringing, distortion you name it. Taking a reasonable picture at 400 asa is impossible, at lower speeds and shooting RAW, which in my opinion you need to do in order to get something useable might do the trick but I don't think this is the purpose of this camera.

I certainly will not purchase the Dlux 3 however sexa it looks, it's a waste of money if it's anything like the panasonic

What a pity on that! Frankly, I had some hope on the DLux3/LX2 clone and thought it may be usable upto ISO400 based on the improved VEIII noise processing. It's DC-Elmarit had proved to give great resolution, sharpness and color. It's only the sensor, I suppose.

Afterall, it is always difficult for Ms/D2 users to be contented with small sensor compacts. To raise the bar too high for this small gadgets.

... but I must say one thing, it really is the best looking Digital camera around. Anyway I was sent home with a Fuji F3 to try out, no viewfinder (takes getting use to) no Raw but great imaging at even 1600, at 3200 and in Black and white mode it resembles Tri-x in Rodinal, now this is a small sensor camera too, I wonder how Fuji can succeed in making a reasonably noise free camera for 1/3 of the price of a DLux which isn't even noise free at 100 asa. The end quality of the picture might be debatable, but what I have seen up until now it's pretty OK.... But if having a chance, check the F30 out it is great for low light.

Looking into it on the web this morning I came across this article:

The Online Photographer - The Online Photographer

go there and search for F30 and there will be 3 links which prettmy uch say the same thing as I think.

thanks very much for this post. i've the d-lux 2, which i love, but which in low-light without a flash is not stellar. i'd been thinking of the upgrade, but looking a lot at the fuji f30 to supplement for dimmer conditions: $284 is about it's average price on the web. maybe leica will be stimulated to update the firmware. it's not usual for a compact, but the leica practically the price of an excellent used dlsr.
