Lost film

I recently loaded a colour film into my M3, but prior to using it, I changed it for a B&W one. However, while rewinding the colour film, I wound all the film back into the cassette.

How can I retrieve the end of the colour film?

If you take the film into a processing house/ camera shop there is a small device that they can use to pull the leader back out. In the old days one could buy one of these but I am not sure they are purchasable any more

While I've read various free ways of doing this involving tape, post it notes, and other household items, the easiest way is with a leader retriever. I like this kind *a lot* more than this kind, but I'm sure you can find the nice kind for cheaper.

You could always go to a one hour photo place and kindly ask the people behind the counter if they could just pull out the leader for you. All those places have them and use them.

Here is a trick that works great at parties. It is easier to show you but I'll try to explain it. Take another roll of unprocessed film that has a leader. Lick or slightly dampen the emulsion on the leader so it is tacky but not dripping wet. With the leader emulsion facing the spool of the missing roll, slide the leader into the leaderless film roll as far as it will gently go, about 1.5 inches . Slowly spin the film spool on the roll with the missing leader as if to wind the film in. You will feel the base of the missing leader stick to the leader with the damp emulsion. Gently pull the film leader out and the missing leader will come with it. This sometimes take a few tries but it has never failed me and on lookers are always amazed. Good luck.

I have did same but always with quick pull. Often first try is successful, but I am not claiming this more successful technic without comparing test serie. :)

Following suggestions from this forum I recently bought an Ilford "Film Retriever" from Ebay in UK. About £4 all in, and now I have no wind-off fears. Of course, since I got the thing I've managed not to wind the film right back into its cassette every time...

Thank you for your suggestions.

I attempted the "second film" trick many times; I tried it quickly; I tried it slowly, but sadly no success.

I intended to ask a favour at my local photo shop next time I was in town, but could not bring myself to ask them until I needed to buy something.

I looked up "film retriever" on ebay with the intention of bidding for one.

However, yesterday I mentioned my predicament to a friend of mine, and he said that he owned a film retriever.

He brought it round today, and the film is now satisfactorily retrieved.
