The Phase backs use pretty common video camera batteries for like the Canons. You can get about 300 shots per battery. I have 5 batteries and never get through 3 of them in a day with heavy shooting. Also if your tethered to a laptop via firewire. The laptop supplies the power. In extreme temps Phase claims below freezing . They have a demo of this on there site. I have yet to run into any issues at all hot or cold. There made like a tank and just flat out work all the time. One main reason I bought Phase was they are easy to work with and they very rarely fail. Plus I can get a loaner overnight if ever needed. Very good support in the US for sure. This is what Leica needs to strive for with the S2 . It is imperative to have a very stable camera system and have the Pro support behind it.

Alan, thanks for the info on the battery(s). I'm guessing (once more) that it will come down to some type of solar charger that can put out the needed 'juice'.

Here's a tip to anyone from a company that's gone digital and reads this site - come out with info that shows or lists companies or have your own solar charger that works on your system. I know there is one from a independent company that someone mentioned a week ago or so, and it was $1200.00 - not cheap - it better be reliable.

There are times when I've been away from power for 2 to 3 weeks (which is the extreme) but I've been able to adapt by using the least 'dependent' equipment. I'll do some checking and see what I can find out.

A smaller, cheaper solar charger will charge the battery too but would take longer. There are a number of models available, do a search. Hasselblad used to make a squeeze grip generator that would power its ELM cameras if the battery died.

Alan - Yes, I just did a basic Google search for portable solar chargers. There are many available and the one(s) that caught my were from Brunton, specifically the Solaris 52, which is the $1200 item.

They say you can charge car batteries, laptops, portable music players, etc., and even link them together for more power if needed. I also noticed that one of the searches made a specific mention to check with the manufacture of any product before you charge it with a charger other than that supplied with the product - which seems fairly obvious.

So at least there is high hope that it can be done.......which makes for one less thing to be concerned about.

I forgot to add....

...the mirror/shutter action is quiet and dampened...somewhere between a Pentax645 and Contax645.

I was told not to make any judgments as it's handmade.

Perhaps they'll improve it further, who knows, but it's already "WOW".

Other tidbits...

• no crop mode

• no automatic sensor cleaning. To be done through mirror chamber.

.....I hope they'll implement:

• 5:4 ratio crop mode [for vertical compositions] with the viewfinder appropriately masked a la Nikon D3

Billy your starting to shake my wallet. LOL

All good stuff we keep hearing and it can still be improved upon before it hits the streets.

I guess I'm a little surprised that there have only been a few comments about the S2 at last weekends Photo Expo.

I thought there would have been more...certainly I was hoping to hear more about it from the hands of Leica users.

I'm a bit surprised as well. I would have expected more comments and feedback on this forum. I didn't attend PhotoPlus becuase I went to Photokina just a few weeks ago and frankly didn't think I'd see anything that wasn't presented in Cologne.

If you haven't already, you can check out my full hands-on S2 report from Photokina on my blog. Plenty of pictures, information direct from Stefan Shulz and Maike Harberts (the S2 product managers), and my own user opinions as well.

Affirmative Andy,,,,or so it seems at least.

I think I've read and searched for everything possibly available so far - including David's blog - all good. Living in the Lake Michigan area, getting out east just wasn't an option. I did manage to get a publication/catalog from Leica USA.

Nicely done with a double fold inside introduction page that showed the S2, etc., and spoke of the 'Future of Memories'. The catalog is nicely done (of course) with the M line-up being the main attraction, yikes, those M wide lenses look mighty fine!!!! - and the the point and shoots.

But, no mention of any existing R line-up - not R9, not lenses. Which by itself is interesting even in knowing that an R10 is coming. Sounds to me like a complete changeover to auto-focus and or with existing lenses adapted to the new body. Not meaning to get off topic - one has to wonder if there will ever be another new R film camera?

The still "make" the R9. At least, they still sell them if you want one.

Andy,,yes, I am aware, just wondering aloud - and of course my inside wheels are turning! It will be interesting next year, that's for sure.
