US$ against Euro has recorded a gain of roughly 18.75% in the last 6 months, as most folks believe that Leica's price bumps were mainly because of the sinking dollar, now here's the drastic reverse in market trend. Will Leica slash price by 18.75%?

Although that assertion has been made frequently, I feel certain it can't represent the opinion of "most folks". I give "most folks" credit for not being that naive.

They didn't cut prices when they were publicly-held with a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders, and on the verge of bankruptcy. But Dr. Kaufmann is a smart cookie, so once the collectors have filled their glass cases with the latest gear, and sales drop to nil, he might decide it's in his own best interest to come down from the ivory tower and price things realistically for those of us without oil wells in our back yards.

It's all down to what the market will bear. The increase in the dollar against the € will yield a nice little windfall profit for Leica.

Keep in mind too that many of the parts, including the single most expensive one - the sensor, of an M8 are priced in dollars.

If the dollar continues to gain in value, we may see some sort of a price adjustment.

I remember back in the mid-1990s', when the dollar ruled supreme, when Leica had a $500.00 rebate program in place for anybody who bought an M6. I still recall the ads in "Shutterbug," a U.S. camera magazine: "Buy a Leica M6, and get $500.00 back!"

Bargains are to be found. A friend visiting from the US, bought a new 50mm Summilux ASPH from a dealer for approx. $2600 once the VAT here in Norway was deducted.

US buyers saving money on Leica gear in Norway, who knew that would be an option 6 months ago :D
