Barnack Challenge Rules

I understand the basis for the Barnack Challenge is the camera body: one designed by Barnack during his era at Leica. This would include the Leica II and the various versions of Leica III. What about camera bodies that copied those designs? I have a Leica II with Elmar 5 cm f3.5 collapsible lens. At least that is what is engraved on the camera and lens. I think it is actually a Zorki 1c of early 1950's vintage with an Industar 22 lens. I understand that the precision and quality of construction may not compare favorably with true Leica hardware, but since the body is directly copied from the Barnack design, does it qualify for the challenge?

Just looking for clarification. No heresy intended.

Hi Bigowl, and welcome. As the originator of the Barnack Challenge, I feel it is up to me to respond. This particular challenge is all about celebrating the very precision and quality of construction to which you refer. It is therefore strictly Barnack only, I'm afraid.

As to your Leica II, what makes you think it is a Zorki copy? I understand that one of the easiest ways to tell is the rangefinder cam. If it is solid, and sort of triangular in shape if it is a Zorki.

Alternatively, post an image or two of your body in the Collectors' Sub-forum - there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people here who could advise.

Best regards,

Bill

I'd definitely agree on this one!

Yes, a picture of the Zorki would be interesting!

Thanks, Bill, for the quick answer. A reasonable rule and I will certainly honor it. I'm pretty sure about the Zorki identification. It has the solid cam, viewfinder bezel without a step and shutter button with internal thread. Also the flat return spring underneath is consistent with that model Zorki. And the lens aperture ring does not have a tab.

Cheers.

Hi Al,

Thanks for being understanding. The Barnack is a (not so) little (not so) local competition that, I am proud to say, like the One Challenge, has taken on a life of it's own. It's nice to celebrate these works of art in the best way possible - by using them!

As to your camera, yes, it does sound like a Zorki - nothing wrong with that, and I have used Feds and FSU lenses myself over the years, but you can't use it for the Barnack, I'm afraid ;)

Regards,

Bill
