Drivers for Epson R2400

Some questions for you wise folk. A couple of years ago I bought an Epson Stylus Photo R2400, and it worked beautifully with my G5 iMac and G4 PowerBook. It still does work with the iMac, but times have moved on and I now use an Intel-based MacBook. This latter machine can use the R2400, but the latest Epson driver (6.1.2) or the alternative that comes with OS X 10.5 (Gutenprint 5.1.3) are very limited. None of the deliciously complex ways of changing B&W output that was in the old drivers that worked on older systems. Not even choices for paper type, and worst of all, no way of turning off the printer's colour management so Photoshop can take over.

So I am left with two options - chucking out a working printer that is capable of good output with the right driver, and the stack of expensive ink cartridges I have for it, and buying a new Epson in the hope that it comes with a driver that is fully functional with OS X 10.5 (knowing it might lose functionality when 10.6 comes along). The second choice is to buy a third party driver/RIP that works with the R2400 and OS X 10.5.

So here are the questions - has anyone any experience with this combination? Any recommendations?

Chris,

I'd have to link my MacBook to the R2400 (I'm always printing from my Imac) ... busy week ahead, perhaps a chance to do so during the weekend. Always takes more time than you wish. Help me remember.

Btw: for B&W printing I use the Quadtone RIP and I'm very pleased with it.

I had the same experience and paid gladly! BTW: it takes some time to tweak the possibilities. I started out on a neutral conversion and printed several photo's to see what's what.

I'll start a thread to see if more people have settings for Quadtone and what their results are.

  • 3 weeks later...

New drivers to solve this were to be posted according to Epson. The tech phone number for tier 3 R2400 help in the USA is:562 276 7272. It is a new number since there has been some reorganization.

I hope that you will bug them re updated drivers and give us R2400 owners feedback. It is a perfectly good printer. At the recent photo show in NYC Epson reps were gaga.
