J Mitchum Posted October 3, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nikon is reportedly working on a medium format dSLR camera of their own to be announced at PMA in March. I don't know if this is old news but I saw no mention of it here while the S2 is being praised as something no one else has. Nikon may actually get theirs to market sooner and I imagine the Nikon will be half the price or less. It's hard to say how Nikon will define medium format though. Somewhat dubious pictures have surfaced showing a sensor that looks to be a slightly larger version of the same 35mm 3:2 ratio, perhaps slightly wider at 16:10. A full frame panoramic sensor perhaps? Has anyone else heard anything about the Nikon MX and how it might compare to the Leica S2? It sounds like they will have their own markets to fill. Advertisement Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Hi J Mitchum, Take a look here Leica S2 vs Nikon MX. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Kent10D Posted October 3, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2008 The S2 is real. As far as I can tell the Nikon MX thing is a big and somewhat dubious rumor at this point, so it seems a little early to start speculating.
guywalder Posted October 3, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 3, 2008 I don't know if this is old news its not news at all, its a rumour, hence the name of the site you linked to.
stevelap Posted October 3, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 3, 2008 It is old news, or old rumour to be precise, which has been circulating for a while. Nikon Rumours, as with Leica Rumours, tends to collate internet chatter from other sites, together with rumour and speculation from other sources. Nevertheless, if it pans out it will be interesting, in that Leica won't necessarily have its USP when the S2 gets to market. For the time being though, the S2 is the only announced 'real' camera. tomasis7 Posted October 3, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2008 I raise the question for myself. How long are Canikon able to continue to produce lenses which are able to out resolve the sensors? What happens if they cannot design cheap lenses which can out resolve future 50mpx sensor? (glass cost limits?) Maybe they will be forced to move up larger image circle (bigger lenses and sensors like S2 does)? I think about Moore's law physics for computer industry. Are there some limits for glass too? sdai Posted October 3, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 3, 2008 Half price means half good ... who cares about Nikon? until you get a Leica, you won't be satisfied.
