Does anyone know if the Lexar 4GB HC cards will work with the Digilux 2? I found an online retailer that sells them for $27. The strange thing is that the 2GB non-HC cards are $35. These are the professional 133x cards. They only charge $4 for shipping, so this looks like a really good deal if the cards will work with the camera.

If anyone cares the online retailer is Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com

The Leica Digilux 2 was engineered too far in advance to the development of SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and the necessary supporting chipset and subsequent firmware.

To clarify, the proper terminology is “SDHC” not “HC.” Additionally, it is a bit confusing to use the term “ 2GB non-HC” memory cards as such cards, by nature, are simple SD (Secure Digital) cards.

A source of more confusion is what are properly referred to as “SD Compatible” 4GB memory cards. Such memory cards neither conform to the number of industry standard SD specifications nor the current single industry standard SDHC specification. While such cards can work in the Leica M8, they cannot work in the Digilux 2.

This has to do with support for the FAT32 file allocation table, which in this case is a separate issue from supporting the SDHC standard as a whole. The Leica Digilux 2 supports FAT16 only. This means that up to a maximum of 2GB (2.2GB to be exact) of storage can be recognized. Most older digital cameras are based on FAT16. Current camera models utilize FAT32. FAT32 goes beyond the 2GB capacity limit to allow up to several Terabytes of storage although the current SD Spec 2.0 (SDHC) only has provisions for up to a 32GB.

In regards to RAM memory for computers, I can highly recommend Crucial. However, they only have fair memory card offerings and prices.

One of many price reference sources I use, as a starting point, is dealram which maintains an updated list of memory prices from participating vendors. Some of the listings are good memory, at good prices from bad vendors, and bad memory, or not so good prices, from good vendors.

However, I have had good experience with one non-participating memory vendor that offers good memory at good prices—MyDigitalDiscount.
