I will be visiting Photokina for the first time this Friday and possibly Saturday, staying in central Cologne. Any practical tips etc for getting to / from Photokina, and what to see in Photokina, for a Leica fan and owner of M and R series...

Thanks for any tips

Steve, got the shoe part covered. An online map exists, and you have an online search for vendors, with corresponding hall and stand numbers. Been doing my home work last couple of hours. It will be interesting for sure. Thanks for the comments. Best Regards.

I could only afford the time to go one day and the scale of it is boggling. So much to see, if you want to cover it in depth.

There are some people who think they need to take all their gear there as a right of passage and their back packs get in everyone's way. Travel light, don't take what you don't need, check coats/jackets at the "Garderobe".

And did we mention shoes?

Travel is easy. Taxi or public transport.

Eat some fruits in the morning and try not to eat anything else over the course of the day. At least don’t eat at the fair (overpriced and bad quality). You probably know this URL:

The Fair - photokina

If you are staying near the Dom, walk to the HBF train station right next to the Dom, take track 10. Every train from this track goes to the Koelnmesse trade center, which is one stop away. The West Entrance is right there, which leaves you standing beside Hall 3 when you get in. If you want to see Leica, go up to 3.1 and through the Canon booth then down to Hall 2.1. You will see the Leica booth right in front of you.

Even though the show hours are long, time moves very quickly. You spend time either walking around trying to find things or standing in line waiting to get your hands on something or talk to somebody. My best advice is allow a week to attempt to see everything!

Good luck.

Thanks to all of you for the hints etc.

Seems the UK Air Traffic failure this afternoon means I will not make it, Easyjet cancelled my flight to Cologne, with no viable option till Sunday night. About 15 flights were cancelled at the same time just in Gatwick, needless to say the environment in Gatwick was not pleasant.

Was just 10 minutes away from boarding......

For those of you that have made it, enjoy.......

Take Care
