Pretty incredible camera system but as far as what I would want for tens of thousands of dollars, it is ergonomically a disaster. This is the back of the camera? You have *got* to be joking!

There could be much better use of the thumb rest area, the grip is mandatory given the hard edge of the bottom.

I'm sorry guys, but the design on this thing is terrible considering what modern technology and design could have brought forth.

The new camera is supposed to be good ... looks ugly though.

So Andreas' webcast has only ONE thing left ... the fate of R. :)

I thought I'd sign in tonight JUST TO SEE WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY. Typical. You can't say anything good about anything.

lol

Also I wanted to read about the new camera, very kewl. Now, it isn't "streamlined", but it is very interesting.

I can't afford it, but it looks awesome! Surprisingly uncluttered for what it is. Hope we'll be able to handle it and take some test photos with it before next summer. Who would have thought that the 2nd legacy-free camera system of the digital age would come from Leica?

No need to look further, lad. Just one post above, another person said it's a ergonomic disaster. :)

Do you really want hear anything for you from me? go home, the S2 is none of your business. LOL

Why don't you try using one before you make a decision?

The empty space left on the back is mind boggling ... I do understand the lack of buttons and knobs is in favor of simplified operation but, why don't they make the screen bigger? make it a touch screen and cancel the push buttons altogether?

How do you know it isn't a touch screen?

Even with a touch screen you want some dedicated "hard" keys. Look at any touch screen system and you'll see a few keys for system functions.

Wow... the fun sure went out of this place.

What a drag.

Spec-wize it is incredible, I bet the optics are total chart busters. But when you bring out a camera of this price and this fresh of a system, there is opportunity to de-mechanize it and humanize it a bit with superior and ground breaking ergonomy.

That was entirely missed here and I gave my input on it, did not mean to take the "fun" out of it.

Sorry, it is just my take on it.

For what I have come to expect in the "cockpit" of a camera yes, it is truly lacking. But for some it may be fine.

They may have done some experiment in house and come up with this ... best in their mind. It just doesn't fit into our mindset.

When it comes to the design of new camera bodies, Nikon/Canon build hundreds, in some cases thousands of mock-ups and fit them into (tens of) thousands of different hand models ... it's probably the biggest difference between Japanese and German engineers.

Maybe it's all about inspiration, who knows what's on top of the designer's head?

Other than this, it's hard to find something to complain about.

One greatest thing is that they've found Fujitsu to build the DSP for them, definitely one of the best RISC/CISC chip designers out there. My understanding is that Phase One will take care of the firmware, right?

It's absolutely a win team altogether.

It looks quite impressive and beautiful overall. However, I don't see controls for setting ISO or exposure compensation when in A mode. On a digital camera, setting ISO is as important as setting aperture and shutter speed. Similarly, exposure compensation is frequently adjusted when in aperture priority mode. If there are no external buttons for these adjustments, then they must be menu items. Current DSLRs typically allow adjustment of these settings almost instantly, without going through a menu; just press a button and dial it in.

I'm guessing this camera is operated in the same way as the Phase One backs. So when you boot up the camera, the main screen will show up, the upper right button is ISO.

This is a warning:

Posters such as some above are stepping out of line with respect to Forum rules and dignity with restpect to other people. Observe Forum and personal courtesy or risk posts being deleted and banning of offenders. This is not negotiable.

When my legitimate work gets interrupted by such thoughtless and stupid behaviour I am inclined to "kick where I see a head".

Now go back to dissecting Photokina, or even takes pictures for a change and let courtesy rein and me work.

Two thoughts:

1. About the market for it: I remember being told once that half the Hasselblads ever sold are still in doctors' closets. While the S2 is billed as a pro camera between Canon Ds & MFDB & will be sold by Phase pro dealers, it's still small & portable enough to appeal to another important Leica market, The Rich. At the really high end, you can be sure that the Sultan will buy 100 gold ones for the male guests at his next party (& gold M8.2s with point-&-shoot mode for the ladies).

In other words, one part of the market is professional, another important part just wealthy.

2. I'm puzzled that there's no 50mm lens at the outset. If the 35 is a 24 & the 75 is sort of a 50, there's a notable gap in the middle.

Sorry not in the least bit interested . Leica should have concentrated on its bread and butter - rangefinder cameras , 3rd party lenses (for Panasonics) . Leica has been a non participant in the DSLR market , what is the point if entering it now . What is the point of entering the MF market , actually it is not entering - it is expressing an intent to enter , with a camera and lenses 6-12 months away.

Poor showing on the 8.2 (these are features that should have been in the original 8) . Plus a price increase !!!

Seems more like vanity cameras than pro equipment . Just keep in mind Canon right now has a 50mp waiting in the wings , and what will they have by the time thje S2 is finallyr eleased .

Simply just underwhelmed by Leica

ps. Still like my M8 - but it seems it will be a long long time before I replace it with another m. Looking forward to my new 5DmkII however.
