stunsworth Posted September 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2008 Welcome to the forum. As far as I'm aware there are no fakes of the M series. People occasionally try to make an M look like a rarer model, but I've never seen anyone fake an M from a different make of camera. Most of the fakes are thread mount cameras - IIC etc. - that were originally Russian cameras, and most of these are openly sold as copies rather than original Leica cameras. So your M2 will be ok. bpark Posted September 18, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted September 18, 2008 thanks for your reply, Steve. I have to really really love my M2 ^^
SJP Posted October 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2008 I bought my M2 from my employer after having it valued etc. When I started checking the serial no. I found that it came from a M1 series 1959 (my year of birth which was fun to know). This series number was confusing until one of the technicians found the original purchase order. It was bought as a M1 with upgrade to M2. For the M8u owners this sounds like deja vu, but .... minor difference my M2 has delayed recocking as well
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 22, 2008 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2008 M1 to M2 conversions were an option. A colleague on another forum has an M1 converted to an M2 ... and his has a custom "real leather" body covering too. He has promised some pictures ... when he posts them I will ask if I can repost them here. Cheers dunk
jc_braconi Posted October 22, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2008 Cameraquest is a good source of information but if you have enough time check the listing and you will find some confusing serial number lot. For my part I found that also one of my M2 is a M1, a M4-P is a M4-2,a MD2 is a M4-P. Try here please LEICA

Philippe D. Posted October 22, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2008 (my number is 980 0**)..I wonder if my M2 is orginal.. or copy?? Why should it be a copy ? Your M2 is either a first type (with a button for releasing the film rewind) or a second type (with the lever but also without self-timer). I have one of the 2nd type #982 5xx The 3rd type have a self-timer lever. The M2 serial numbers goes from 950 001 to 1 102
lars_bergquist Posted October 26, 2008 Share #9 Posted October 26, 2008 Be aware that some button rewind cameras were factory-converted to lever rewind as the owners became fed up with the levers (just as some M3 cameras were converted from double to single-stroke). Also, the '2nd' and '3rd' versions were not consecutive. Alternative batches were produced of both nearly until the end of its life.
