Advertisement Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Hi rosuna, Take a look here 21 & 24 Summilux?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted September 17, 2008 Share #182 Posted September 17, 2008 I'm sure you'll get them. The lenses aren't going on sale for 3 months.
peter_n Posted September 17, 2008 Share #183 Posted September 17, 2008 If you want to give LEICA credit for listening buy the two lenses. LEICA can´t survive on a lot of bla bla bla (talking). I agree. I'm in for the 24.
Guest Posto 6 Posted September 17, 2008 Share #184 Posted September 17, 2008 Speak with Customer Services, or Marketing at Leica in Solms. There will be some lenses out there being tested by NDA photographers and there will be some at Photokina. However, I bet that all of them are accounted for However, if you were to get one, as a man in the street, before January, I'd be very surprised. I see your point, but hope that you are wrong. In any event, Leica can, in aggregate, derive far greater profits from the enthusiastic "men on the street" segment than from the professional one, who are just as likely to buy second-hand, and it would be nice to see this sector getting favourable treatment from time to time. I cannot see that it would be that difficult for them to find a lens, especially as I would be asking for no favours price-wise. As a long-standing Leica owner (since 1967- when I was 13!) I also feel that I may occasionally be able try to call on some goodwill.
Guest Posto 6 Posted September 17, 2008 Share #185 Posted September 17, 2008 Perhaps Leica would be willing to auction their Photokina demonstrator! In all seriousness, and without trying to be facetious, I really would be extremely grateful for any help that they may be able to provide to me in getting one of these asap. andybarton Posted September 17, 2008 Share #186 Posted September 17, 2008 All you have to do is pick up the phone and ask them. Number on their website. No one here has one that they can let you have... BTW - what part of Brazil are you in?
Guest Posto 6 Posted September 17, 2008 Share #187 Posted September 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will try tomorrow- thanks. I am based in Rio de Janeiro, at the end of Copacabana beach, so have some wonderful opportunities for taking photos. However, I also spend quite a few months in Europe every year-mostly Greece, UK and Switzerland.
Rolo Posted September 17, 2008 Share #188 Posted September 17, 2008 I will try tomorrow- thanks. I am based in Rio de Janeiro, at the end of Copacabana beach, so have some wonderful opportunities for taking photos. However, I also spend quite a few months in Europe every year-mostly Greece, UK and Switzerland. Good luck. The back of the queue is round the corner. Lets see some pics to see what you might do with it and I'll step aside. Rolo
Guest Posto 6 Posted September 18, 2008 Share #189 Posted September 18, 2008 I will do so at some stage- but please understand that I am not a pro photographer, and also have other things on at the moment- (unfortunately, I am an investment banker and the markets are systemically in danger of collapsing at this moment, as no doubt you have seen)- however, rest assured I will get round to doing this soon. Remember that I have no interest in getting "your place in the queue"- rather I need the lens because of a specific project myself and colleagues have been working on for a long time with (our investment banking) clients in a personal capacity
Guest Posto 6 Posted September 18, 2008 Share #190 Posted September 18, 2008 In any case, I think it is now time to return to the main thrust of this thread- apologies to all for the distraction caused by my requests. I will also keep you all posted on developments, and, if I manage to get the lens, photos and comments. Now back to work....(unfortunately)
rosuna Posted September 18, 2008 Share #191 Posted September 18, 2008 I'm sure you'll get them. The lenses aren't going on sale for 3 months. Steve, I don't know what to do. I like very much the "28mm" FoV of the 21mm lens on a M8, but I don't like the "21mm" FoV on 24x36mm. I don't like external viewfinders either. The "24mm" lens gives and odd "32mm" equiv. FoV on the M8, but also a wide enough "24mm" FoV on 24x36. It is a smaller lens and you can use the viewfinder of the M8. I do street reportage (no architecture, landscapes...). The 24mm lens has the front element somewhat "reduced". The lens is like a barrel: it becomes more wide at the center and then it reduces the diameter towards the two extremes. I suppose Leica has put a lot of effort in reducing the front lens diameter in order to make the M8 viewfinder usable (I am not sure about this). The 21mm lens is more difficult to design, but in this case the front element is free from diameter constraints and the lens has the typical "trompet" shape. The MTF curves of the 24mm should be a bit better, but if my hypothesis is true, Leica may have sacrificed a bit of performance in the 24mm lens in exchange for a smaller size of the front elements... Guest leica_mage Posted September 19, 2008 Share #192 Posted September 19, 2008 The 24 Summilux was the one we saw reference to in Solms in June - poo-poo'd by some at the time That may be because you sounded more into yourselves and your huis-clos meeting than actually injterested in the new lens[es]. Do be careful, some very critical people are watching this site. It is not an official Leica site, as you know - hence the "L", despite the link - nor any kind of harbinger or barometer for that matter.
andybarton Posted September 19, 2008 Share #193 Posted September 19, 2008 Sorry, Alex I don't know what you are talking about. This is the thread where you and I discussed the 24 'lux, following the meeting at Hessenpark http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/60590-leica-rumors.html#post625704 I assume that "huis-clos" means "closed house" but this was nothing of the sort, and you were invited to attend, just as I was. It was an open invitation to all. Anyone can visit Solms and have the factory tour as we did. As to your last paragraph, I am at a loss to understand that too. sdai Posted September 19, 2008 Share #194 Posted September 19, 2008 If you want to give LEICA credit for listening buy the two lenses. LEICA can´t survive on a lot of bla bla bla (talking). Can't agree more with you, sir. I plan to do it one at a time ... starting from the 21. Man, I've no doubt that many other wishlists will pop up in the meantime, people will complain these are too fast, too big, too heavy.
jackal Posted September 19, 2008 Share #195 Posted September 19, 2008 the biggest problem will be availability only a handful coming to the UK for example so you need to be quick and lucky to get one All the signs are that Leica don't actually intend or forecast selling many of these new fast lenses at all
stunsworth Posted September 19, 2008 Share #196 Posted September 19, 2008 As to your last paragraph, I am at a loss to understand that too. It sounds like a threat to me. Anyhow, I think Alex is just annoyed because his prediction of a 28mm Summilux didn't come to pass - for now at least, I expect one before too long. A quote from that thread... Maybe a 24/1.4 was discussed, but a 28/1.4 will be produced... :D Can't win 'em all.

sdai Posted September 19, 2008 Share #198 Posted September 19, 2008 Anyhow, I think Alex is just annoyed because his prediction of a 28mm Summilux didn't come to pass - for now at least, I expect one before too long. A quote from that thread... Until Leica has a Noct, Lux, Cron, Elmarit and Elmar at every single focal length, there'll always be some disgruntled customers. Oops ... I just forgot that each focal length should be covered by a Tri-Elmar too.
stunsworth Posted September 19, 2008 Share #199 Posted September 19, 2008 Oops ... I just forgot that each focal length should be covered by a Tri-Elmar too. Nah, they just need a single Oct-Elmar - 16/21/24/28/35/50/75/90. A winner at f2!
